Unit of Inquiry: 'Where We Are in Place and Time'
Research Projects
This term, the Year 3 students have been busy working on their research projects as part of our Unit of Inquiry, 'Where We Are in Place and Time – Cultures Change Over Time'. Students were tasked with researching a specific aspect of Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture and history. They were extremely engaged throughout the project and enjoyed creating their PowerPoint presentations on their chosen topics. The students really looked forward to it every single day!
It was great to see them working hard while picking up new tech skills and learning about Indigenous histories. We were so impressed with how the students stepped up and confidently presented their research. Their hard work and preparation paid off- they’re well on their way to becoming skilled public speakers!
AFL Jerseys
As part of our Unit of Inquiry, the students created their own jerseys, linking with the AFL’s Indigenous Round - the 'Sir Doug Nicholls Round.' The students designed their own sports jerseys using symbols to represent Australia. The symbols could relate to different types of land features. For example, mountains might be represented with ∧∧∧, or a river could be drawn with a blue line. The kids let their creativity shine through - each jersey is unique and meaningful!
National Sorry Day
As part of National Sorry Day, the students wrote a message of hope, empathy or understanding to the children of the Stolen Generations on a hand template. They then decorated their hands using relevant colours and symbols, adding elements of Country (earth, river, sky) to honour the connection to land and culture.
Mathematics- Multiplication, Division & Time
We are continuing to develop our skills in multiplication and division in mathematics. The students participated in a meaningful problem-solving task where they had to think systematically and present their findings methodically.
The first task was to answer this question:
My farm has some cows and some chickens. I have ten animals altogether on my farm.
1) How many cows and chickens might there be on my farm? Show as many different
combinations as you can.
Each question built upon the previous one, encouraging the students to deepen their understanding step by step. The students really enjoyed the challenge and impressed us with their thoughtful approach and strong problem-solving skills!
The Year 3 students are still enjoying practicing their multiplication and division on ‘Times Table Rockstars’ and have shown huge amounts of growth in their fact knowledge and recall. They have been practicing multiplication through a variety of activities and games. One game that the students love is called ‘Factor Flood,’ in which they use a deck of cards to learn about different factors of a number. This game was great for helping students understand that a number can relate to multiple multiplication facts.
We have also started our unit on time. The kids created their own analog clocks using what they knew about time. They look wonderful, and we will definitely be using them in future lessons when we practice telling time!
We cannot believe Term 2 is nearly coming to an end. It’s been a fantastic few months full of learning, growth, and lots of fun. We hope all the Year 3 families have a wonderful time over the holidays!
