Year 1 Students Enjoy A Delicious Day Making Pizza
In a fun and hands-on learning experience, Year 1 students recently spent a day making pizza from scratch, turning their classroom into a mini pizzeria! The activity was not only a tasty treat but also an exciting way to develop important skills like measuring, mixing, and following instructions.
The day began with an introduction to the basic ingredients: flour, yeast, water, salt, and olive oil. With their Moustaches on and hands washed, the children eagerly measured out each ingredient with the help of their teachers. Mixing the dough was a messy but joyful experience — little hands kneaded and stretched the soft dough, learning about textures and patience as it slowly transformed into a smooth ball.
While the dough rested and rose, the students prepared their toppings which included cheese, tomato and basil leaves. Some even brought in their own toppings from home. Every child had a role in creating their perfect pizza. This part of the day was filled with excitement and creativity as the children chose their favourite ingredients and discussed flavour combinations.
After the dough had risen, the real fun began. The students rolled out their own dough bases, then carefully spread tomato sauce, sprinkled cheese, and added their toppings. Each pizza was unique, reflecting the personality and tastes of its maker.
Once assembled, the pizzas were baked in the school’s oven while the children learned about the science of cooking—how heat transforms dough into a golden crust and melts cheese into a gooey delight. The classroom soon filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pizza.
The best part of the day was, of course, tasting the pizzas. With smiles and satisfied bellies, the Year 1 students proudly enjoyed the fruits of their labour. This pizza-making day was not just about food—it was about teamwork, creativity, and learning through doing.
Teachers noticed how engaged and enthusiastic the children were throughout the activity, highlighting the value of practical lessons that combine fun and education. The experience also helped build confidence and independence as students followed step-by-step instructions to create something delicious.
In the end, the pizza-making day was a resounding success, leaving the Year 1 students with happy memories, new skills, and a better understanding of where their food comes from. It was a wonderful way to celebrate and end our unit of inquiry understanding that food goes through many stages of production before reaching us.
