News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

This week we farewelled Mel who has been our garden specialist for 8 1/2 years.

Thank you Mel for all that you have contributed to our kitchen garden and the wider school grounds

This week in Cooking, Grade 4 and 5 made Pumpkin and Tomato Soup, and Celery Soup served with Pumpkin and Cheese Scones and Cheese and Herb Scones.

From the garden we used celery, garlic, parsley, pumpkin (we steamed and froze last term), thyme, chives, tomato passata (4/5s made and froze last term).  We also used potatoes and onions.

Lea and her group prepared the ingredients and cooked the Pumpkin and Tomato Soup and the Celery Soup. They learnt how to roughly cut the onion (a few tears for Frankie!) and celery and use the food processor to chop it finely so that the soup would cook quickly. Perla, Thea, Grace and their group mixed all the ingredients for the Celery Soup and stirred and tested it, as it cooked.  Frankie and Clem and their group stirred the Pumpkin soup and learnt how to check when it was ready.

Ivy, Merry. Alfie, Henry and their team grated the cheese, prepared the herbs and measured the ingredients and made the Cheese and Herb Scones.

For the Pumpkin and Cheese Scones, Ulla and her team, grated the cheese, mashed the pumpkin and Henry and his group measured the butter and flour and used the food processor to mix it.  They carefully and lightly mixed all the ingredients so the scones would be light and fluffy and learnt how to use the scone cutter (no twisting!) so the scones would rise well.  They did a great job, as the scones rose well and were light, fluffy and delicious!  (see the photos).

We made an extra batch of Pumpkin Scones to share with Mel and the teachers for Mel’s farewell morning tea.

Clem and Frankie B learnt how to  prep the dishes and load the dishwasher. They worked really well with their team to wash, dry and put away all the cooking dishes.

While Lea’s group were cleaning up and setting the tables, Merry and her group collected Autumn foliage and leaves.  With Ivy, Alfie and Frankie, they created a beautiful table decoration with the letters of Mel’s name. (see the photos).

The students invited Mel to share the food, to thank her for all she has done as Garden teacher, and everyone shared their thoughts and appreciation for what she had taught them and what they enjoyed in the garden with her.

Everyone loved the dishes they made and there was only some Pumpkin and Tomato Soup left.

Great cooking Grade 4 and 5 and thanks Lea!

This is what they said about their cooking this week.

I liked the Pumpkin Soup because it was sweet, but not too sweet and its got a bit of spice to it. Romy

The soup is so good! I’m so full – you know that feeling when you want to push your tummy out, but you can’t! Ulla

I grated the cheese and mixed the ingredients for the Cheese and Herb Scones.  I really liked the Pumpkin Soup. Ivy
