- Fourteen – Seventeen Year Olds:
CANVAS is aimed at supporting neurodivergent teens to improve self-esteem, navigate personal challenges, process past traumas and promote social confidence. Using the power of shared experiences and participant led activities and discussions, teens in the CANVAS group report significant benefit from engaging with others who struggle with the same challenges. Why Choose one of Insight’s Groups?
Through each of our groups, children and teens are supported to learn that it is okay to have big feelings and to develop safe and effective ways to express them. They are supported to embed a secure sense of self and confidence in their unique personalities, skills and strengths and to also experience a sense of connection whilst learning key skills to navigate difficult experiences as they arise in the future.
The programs are run in small groups (no more than 6) to ensure individual attention and support, and are adapted to meet the needs of each participant. Each group issuitable for children who are struggling to fit in, who feel overwhelmed by big emotions, who need help navigating social situations or who are big worriers.
Based on the principles of kindness, compassion, gratitude, acceptance and non-judgment, our programs draw on a mix of meaningful and age-appropriate techniques to teach a range of skills for life, including:
- Nervous system regulation - through mindfulness, yoga and meditation activities
- Respectful relationship skills including: respectful communication and turn taking skills - through group and partnered activities
- Boundaries - respecting when someone else communicates a boundary (for example: if a child doesn’t want to share with the group, this boundary is respected)
- Emotional recognition - exploring feelings and the meaning within stories through reading and storytelling activities
- Emotional expression - through group discussion, creative and drama based activities and paired activities.
- Playfulness – bringing fun into learning new life skills.
Positive Outcomes Identified by Young People and Parents of Past Participants Include:
- Increased comfort and capacity to talk about their feelings
- Increased awareness of feelings, and increased ways to safely manage big feelings (like anger)
- Increased willingness to step out of their comfort zone
- Improved self-confidence
- Improved ability to self-regulate, by identifying when they need quiet time
- Feeling more connected to a community of other kids.
