From the Deputy Principal
Student Code of Conduct
We have recently re-launched the Student Code of Conduct which is underpinned by our school values: respect, integrity, commitment and compassion. At assembly, I shared with students their rights as part of this community and the expectations of them as active members of our school. We approach our expectations from a pro-social perspective, that is, each person in our community has responsibility for building a culture of care for one another.
The Code of Conduct first emphasises that Great Southern Grammar is a school where each person can achieve their full potential. We are committed to inspiring and developing students during their time here and beyond GSG. The Student Code of Conduct outlines the expectations of a GSG student during their time with us on campus, in the community and online, whilst instilling the school values of integrity, respect, compassion and commitment. Students are expected to uphold these values and abide by the Student Code of Conduct and related policies at all times.
All students have a right to:
- Feel safe and be safe
- Be treated with dignity, respect and justice
- A positive learning environment that creates maximum learning opportunities
- Voice concerns and be heard
- Physical and psychological safety
- Be valued as an individual
And students are expected to:
- Maintain a safe and positive learning environment free from fear, harassment or bullying
- Respect diversity and difference such as culture, race identity, beliefs, opinions and decisions of others
- Take ownership for their actions
- Provide a presence as a positive bystander
- Follow all reasonable directions
- Care for the cultural, physical and spiritual aspects of the school
- Respect their own property and that of others
- Be punctual and regular in attendance
- Participate fully in the life of the school
- Always abide by school policies
Lastly, good standing is a key component of our code of conduct. Maintaining good standing means students will be able to enjoy all the opportunities GSG offers. For a student to have good standing at school, we need to see school values in action and a full commitment to the Student Code of Conduct. The sorts of behaviours we are looking for include respectful interactions with peers and staff, tidy uniform all of the time, completion of set tasks from every class, good rates of attendance at school, and attendance at School events such as swimming, cross country and athletics, whether that be in a participating role or a supporting role.
Class and homeroom teachers have been sharing the code of conduct with students and we look forward to continuing to build a safe, supportive culture of mutual trust and respect.
Celebration of life in Albany for Penny Leiper
As we have shared, the GSG community was saddened to learn of the passing of former Head of English, Ms Penny Leiper. Penny passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a long illness. A celebration of Penny's life will take place here at GSG, in the Pratten Centre Foyer, at 3.30pm this Saturday 14 September. All are welcome to attend.

Update on Ulster Road Lane Closure - Stage 5
The authorised contractor, DM Civil, is progressing well in their work to replace a wastewater pipeline under Ulster Road. This pipeline is an important part of Albany's wastewater network and the work will reduce future leaks and breaks.
From Thursday 12 September we will move to Stage 5, which includes a shift in the lane closure along Ulster Road. Work for this stage should be complete around early November.
What to expect in Stage 5:
- A single northbound lane will be closed from Angove Road and Martin Road.
- The southbound lane from Lower King / Bayonet Head to North Road will remain open, however will have reduced speed limits.
- A detour along Angove Road and Collingwood Road will be in place to reduce traffic around the schools and hospital.
- Signage will be in place to show access to the Hospital and Health Campus.
- Access to properties and businesses will be maintained.
- For the safety of our workers and the community, please follow all traffic signs and reduced speed limits.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this essential pipeline replacement. With your continued support, we can shape WA's water future together.
