The Divergent Series

The Divergent series by Veronica Roth is a must-read for our student fans of dystopian fiction. With its gripping plot, relatable characters, and thought-provoking themes, it offers both entertainment and meaningful insights for any teenager.

The books reveal a dystopian saga set in a future Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to a particular virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). The story follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who discovers she is Divergent, meaning she does not fit neatly into any one faction. As she navigates her way through a society that fears and seeks to eliminate Divergents, Tris uncovers dark secrets and faces immense challenges.

All four books in this special 10th Anniversary Edition collection are featured in the library and available for student loan.

Courage Be My Friend

Courage, Be My Friend: The Vivian Bullwinkel Story by Jenny Davis is a gripping example of teenage historical fic that chronicles the extraordinary life of Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, an Australian Army nurse during World War II.

Sister Bullwinkel enlisted in the Australian Army Nurse Service at the outbreak of World War II and was posted to Singapore. In February 1942, she and hundreds of others attempted to escape the advancing Japanese army but was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Vivian spent the next three years in captivity, working tirelessly to help her fellow prisoners. Her evocative story is told through the eyes of one of those prisoners, fifteen-year-old Edith 'Edie'. Their remarkable friendship would help them survive and became the basis of a lifelong bond.

This book is new to the library and is highly recommended for secondary school students.
