Senior School News

Time flies when you're having fun!

We are on the home stretch of Term 3!

English

This term, our senior students have been immersed in exciting and culturally rich novels during their new literacy block, running from 12-2 PM daily. Grade 6 students are diving into Us Mob Walawurru by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler, an inspiring story about Ruby, a determined young Aboriginal girl. As she navigates the challenges of her community, Ruby learns valuable lessons about culture, identity, and resilience, which our students are exploring through character analysis and factual recounts. This novel provides a perfect platform for students to connect with themes of cultural pride and community strength.

Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students are captivated by Black Cockatoo, another beautifully written novel by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. Set on Jaru Country, this heart warming tale follows Mia, a young girl who fights to protect a black cockatoo while confronting family and cultural tensions. The students are diving into character exploration and learning about how Mia's journey highlights the importance of standing up for what you believe in, making it an engaging tool for writing analysis this term.

Maths

Our senior students have been working hard to improve their maths skills with Times Table Rockstars, which continues to be a key feature of our curriculum. It’s been fantastic to see how much progress the students have made, and they should be encouraged to share their progress with you at home!

In Grade 6, students are wrapping up their work on grid coordinates and will soon be moving into their next unit, which focuses on perimeter, area, and volume. This exciting new unit will continue into Term 4, offering students the opportunity to apply their learning in practical, real-world contexts. Meanwhile, Grade 5 students are working on enhancing their addition and subtraction strategies, tackling problem-solving challenges with enthusiasm.

 Topic

Our Topic classes have been winding down as we approach the end of the term. Grade 5 students are finishing off their unit on Matter, delving into the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. This hands-on learning has provided a great opportunity for students to solidify their understanding of these fundamental scientific concepts.

In Grade 6, students have been focusing their Topic time on preparing for their fundraising stalls as part of the sleepout initiative. They’ve worked hard on developing business plans, including exploring their target audience, competition, advertising strategies, and profit and loss margins. This initiative is not only supporting a great cause but also teaching valuable entrepreneurial skills.

Sleep Out for Homelessness - Stalls

On Thursday, 19th September, our Grade 6 students will be hosting their much anticipated fundraising stalls between 12-2 PM. The students have been working hard to create a range of exciting stalls, including baked goods for sale, cookie decorating, carnival-style games, and sporting activities with prizes up for grabs. It promises to be a fun-filled event! We remind students to bring money to participate in the stalls, with all funds raised going to St Vincent de Paul (St Vinnies) to support their efforts in combating homelessness. If families would like to contribute to this important cause, donations can be made directly through our fundraising page: Sacred Heart Grade 6 Sleepout.

Extra-Curricular Activities

  • Sleepout: We are proud to announce that several of our Grade 6 students have applied to participate in the annual sleepout to raise money for St. Vincent de Paul (St Vinnies) as they continue their mission to combat homelessness. The sleepout will be held on 19th September for successful applicants. Alongside this, all Grade 6 students will be running fundraising stalls to support their peers in this initiative. These stalls will help raise money for St Vinnies, and we are excited to see the creativity and hard work our students are putting into their efforts.
