Year 3 Celebration Newsletter
Reading:
In Reading, this semester students studied the novel ‘The Iron Man’. During reading, they further developed comprehension skills such as predicting, inferring, and summarising.
Students learnt to identify the main idea in fiction and nonfiction texts and distinguished the difference between the ‘topic’ and the ‘main idea’. Students learnt to understand the importance of visualising as they read and how it can assist them to comprehend the text.
Writing:
In writing, the Grade 3s looked at the following text types through their novel study of ‘The Iron Man’:
Information: They explored the aspects of information texts, beginning with the text structure, text features and language. Students applied their understanding of the structure, features and language to craft their own information text. | Explanation: Students learnt that explanation texts focus on making something clear and understandable and they answered the question "how" or "why." Students used what they learnt to craft their own explanation text. |
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students focused on Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. In Number, we explored Multiplicative Thinking, by looking into multiplying and dividing numbers. In Measurement, students learnt to tell time to the minute, as well as measuring and comparing objects using familiar units of mass. Lastly, in Probability, we learnt to identify practical activities and everyday events that involve chance, and described possible outcomes and events.
Wellbeing:
In Wellbeing, students continued The Resilience Project, a program aimed at nurturing resilience in our students. Through interactive activities like discussions, journaling, and mindfulness exercises, students will explore gratitude, empathy, and emotional literacy, they continue to learn to navigate challenges with courage and optimism. By fostering resilience, we're empowering our students to thrive academically, socially, and personally.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, students explored the natural characteristics of Australia and some other places in the world. They learnt about the significance of Australia's natural environment. and learnt how different people have different views about the same place. Students also learnt about the Local Government, Laws and Identity.
PERFORMING ARTS:
This term in Performing Arts, Grade Three students worked in teams to explore narrative structure and character using the dramatic conventions of ‘Tableaux’ and ‘Mime’. These forms of Drama use no words, which encouraged students to employ facial expressions and body language to tell their stories. They enjoyed working in groups to explore concepts of status and empathy and built upon critical thinking skills when giving and receiving feedback with each other.
VISUAL ARTS
This term, students experienced how to celebrate the world of Visual Arts at our Art Show! They shared the excitement of presenting their work with family and the community, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment. Throughout the term, Year 3 students learned to express their ideas and emotions through various artistic mediums, developing their personal voice and style. They continued to develop their creative expression, learning to demonstrate their ideas and emotions through various artistic mediums, developing their personal voice and style.
The art show was a tremendous success, highlighting our students' creativity and talent. The diverse range of artworks captivated the audience, and the enthusiastic support from families and the community made the event truly memorable. The show not only celebrated our students' artistic achievements but also strengthened appreciation for the arts within our school.
JAPANESE
This term in Japanese, the Grade 3 and 4 students developed their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through a unit on the theme of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Students developed their vocabulary of 13 sports and 10 countries in Japanese. Students also continued to learn new hiragana and consolidate previously learned hiragana, to support their reading and writing in Japanese. Students learned about tanabata (Star Festival) which is celebrated in July in Japan.
PE
In Grade 3 PE classes, students continued to develop their fundamental movement skills while exploring more challenging games and sports. They refined their techniques and strategies, focusing on fair play and teamwork. Students refined their skills while playing sports like badminton and volleyball.
