Respectful Relationships and Berry Street Program
Teaching Respectful Relationships using a teacher scaffold model in a two-year rotation is essential because it allows students to build a strong foundation in emotional literacy, empathy, and respect while deepening their understanding over time. The scaffolded approach ensures that students receive guided support as they navigate complex social and emotional concepts, progressing from basic emotional awareness to more advanced skills like conflict resolution and positive relationship management. By revisiting these topics across two years, students are able to reinforce their learning and apply it to real-world situations as they mature.
The two-year rotation is also important for developmental appropriateness. Respectful Relationships concepts evolve in complexity, and giving students multiple opportunities to engage with these ideas ensures that they are learning in ways that are suitable for their cognitive and emotional development. This sustained and scaffolded approach helps foster a school culture that promotes emotional intelligence, empathy, and inclusivity, contributing to healthier peer interactions and a more respectful school environment.
In Term 4, Prep students explore Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relations, focusing on understanding their own identities and treating others with respect. Year 1 and Year 5 continue building awareness of Gender and Identity, encouraging students to recognize diversity and challenge stereotypes. On Thursday the 17th of October, we will be acknowledging Day for Daniel, a special event dedicated to raising awareness about child safety and protection. To mark this important day, students are encouraged to wear something red as a symbol of support and remembrance for Daniel Morcombe. The day will include activities and discussions that empower students to recognise unsafe situations and understand strategies to stay safe. By participating in Day for Daniel, we aim to foster a culture of awareness, resilience, and respect within our school community, ensuring that every student feels informed and supported.
As part of our Day for Daniel activities, students will participate in age-appropriate safety lessons through a rotation system. Prep to Year 2 students will engage in interactive sessions focused on understanding safe and unsafe situations, recognising trusted adults, and practising strategies like saying "no" in uncomfortable scenarios. Year 3/4 students will explore more complex topics, including personal boundaries and online safety, learning how to manage risky situations both in-person and online. Meanwhile, the Year 5/6 students will take part in advanced safety lessons, covering topics like peer pressure, identifying signs of grooming, and how to seek help when needed. These lessons are designed to equip all students with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in a range of environments.
