I CAN Network - Student Talk
On Tuesday 6 May, Kate, from the I CAN Network, came to speak to Year 7 and 8 students about inclusion and the power or difference and diversity. Kate spoke about her personal journey understanding and embracing her neurodiversity. She spoke to the students about the ways that brains can work differently and how these differences make our world interesting and amazing. She explained how these differences are important, because they lead to different ways of seeing and knowing which can lead to developments in things like science, technology, and the arts (to name a few) as well as the way we understand ourselves. Kate also spoke to the students about what they can do when they notice differences in themselves or each other and how important it is to accept and support these differences, so we all feel included and have a sense of belonging at school.
The I CAN Network has been partnering with Nazareth College to deliver staff professional learning, student mentor groups and student information sessions. Now in its tenth year, the I CAN Network works with autistic young people, and schools to achieve widespread influence across the landscape of children’s rights and inclusive education and employment. In the past year alone, I CAN has mentored more than 3000 Autistic children, teenagers and young adults. Since its inception in 2013, the I CAN Network currently employees 106 people Australia-wide, 82 proudly autistic.

Year 9 Food Studies
As part of the Year 9 Food Studies course students have been studying an International Food unit. The students have been learning about common ingredients used in certain cuisines and cooking dishes from countries around the world that have influenced our food culture in Australia. The students began with an Indigenous Wattleseed Damper. They have also produced Thai Chicken Cakes, San Chow Bow and Homemade Pizza. The Year 9 Chefs have enjoyed the production and of course eating their delicious food together at the end of each class.

VCE Top Arts
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting students recently attended an excursion to the annual Top Arts exhibition, where they viewed some of the finest student artworks from 2024. They had the unique opportunity to explore the folios of these past students, gaining valuable insights into the processes of recording, annotating, developing ideas, and refining methods for final artworks. Following the exhibition, students toured the Australian art collection, viewing some of the nation’s most renowned artworks. The excursion offered firsthand examples of diverse display methods, gallery lighting, and exhibition design techniques, enriching their understanding of professional art presentation.

Year 8 Visual Communication Design
As part of Year 8 Visual Communication Design, students were set the task of producing their own Superhero/Character Cityscapes to expand their knowledge of different drawing methods. To produce these unique drawings, they were introduced to the drawing method of Two-Point Perspective. This enabled the students to draw their 3D cities, close to how we would see them with our own eyes. To further enhance the cities, they were required to add superheroes, villains, anti-heroes, or characters to tell a story in their drawings. Please take a look at their distinctive pieces below.
