What's On In 1/2

Literacy
This term, our Literacy program will take students on an exciting journey through the world of nonfiction writing, with a strong focus on creating engaging and informative information reports. Aligned with our Integrated Studies unit on Australian Animals, students will explore how to research, organise, and present factual information in a clear and creative way- developing essential skills in both reading and writing.
To help us understand what makes great writing, we’ll continue to learn from published authors, focusing on the power of precise language and sentence structure. We have begun this exploration with celebrated Australian author Nikki Greenberg and her beautifully illustrated book Bitsy. Through her work, students will reflect on how authors use language to draw in and connect with readers-skills they will apply to their own writing projects.
In addition to our classroom focus, Term 2 brings a number of exciting events that will inspire and enrich our literacy learning:
- Mother’s Day provides a heartfelt opportunity for students to write with a purpose.
- Reconciliation Week will invite students to reflect on Australia’s shared history and explore writing as a tool for understanding, respect, and unity.
- We’re also thrilled to take part in the Annual National Simultaneous Storytime, where students across the country read the same book at the same time. This year’s story is The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel—a wonderful chance to celebrate Australian literature and the joy of reading together.
We will cap off our studies with an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary where the students will get to experience Australian Animals and learn how protecting them.
With so many rich experiences ahead, Term 2 promises to be full of learning, inspiration, and creativity. We look forward to seeing our students’ voices grow stronger and more confident through their writing.
Mathematics
This term in Grade 1/2, we’re diving into a variety of engaging Numeracy topics that help students build strong mathematical foundations while developing confidence in solving real-world problems.
We’ll begin the term by revising key number knowledge, focusing on place value, number sequencing, and mathematical language to deepen students’ understanding of how numbers work and relate to one another. This will set the stage for more complex concepts and problem-solving later in the term.
Time will also be a focus this term, as students explore the duration of time and learn about different units of time such as seconds, minutes, and hours. Through interactive lessons, we’ll be exploring analogue clocks, identifying their key features, and learning to read and interpret time in different formats.
Our measurement focus will involve hands-on investigations into mass and capacity. Students will use real-life objects and tools to compare and measure how heavy or full things are, while building their vocabulary and understanding of measurement concepts in everyday contexts.
In Geometry, we’ll be extending our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes, identifying their features, and exploring how these shapes appear in our world. Through drawing, building, and sorting shapes, students will gain a deeper understanding of form, structure, and spatial awareness.
Finally, we’ll continue to develop a toolkit of addition and subtraction strategies, encouraging students to apply different methods to solve number problems. Whether it’s using counting on, number lines, doubles, or fact families, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking and choose from a range of strategies.
With a strong focus on hands-on learning, discussion, and real-life connections, Term 2 promises to be full of rich mathematical exploration. We look forward to supporting your children as they grow as confident, curious, and capable mathematicians!
