A Humble and Hopeful Leader Farewelled
We share the sad news of the passing of Pope Francis, a much-loved and inspiring leader of the Catholic Church.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history when he became the first pope from South America and the first Jesuit pope. From the moment he stepped onto the balcony in 2013, choosing the name “Francis” after St Francis of Assisi, it was clear he would lead in a different way – with warmth, humility, and heart.
Pope Francis reminded us that faith is about compassion, not judgment. He urged us to care for the poor, look after our planet, and welcome those who are on the edges of society. His famous words, “Who am I to judge?”, reflected his belief that the Church should be a place of mercy and love.
He connected with people around the world – Catholic or not – by being real, honest, and hopeful. He lived simply, spoke plainly, and led with kindness. Whether washing the feet of prisoners or writing about climate change, Pope Francis showed us that faith should be lived in action.
While we mourn his loss, we are grateful for all that he gave. His legacy will live on in the way we treat one another, the way we care for creation, and the way we lead with love.
May he rest in peace, and may his example continue to guide us all.
A Prayer for Pope Francis
God of all comfort and mercy,We thank You for the life and service of Pope Francis – a true witness to Your love in our world.Through his leadership, he reminded us of the power of kindness, humility, and inclusion. Now that his earthly journey is complete, welcome him into Your eternal embrace.May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
May we continue to be inspired by his words, challenged by his actions, and comforted by the hope he shared.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.Amen.
With the passing of Pope Francis, the Church now enters a period called the interregnum – the time between popes. During this period, preparations are made for the election of a new pope through a sacred process called a conclave.
The conclave will officially begin on 7th May in Rome, as cardinals from around the world gather to prayerfully choose the next leader of the Catholic Church.
Here is how the process unfolds:
As we prepare for this sacred moment in our Church’s history, let us pray that the Holy Spirit will guide the cardinals in choosing a leader who will continue Pope Francis’s legacy of compassion, justice, and deep faith.
Catholic Social Teaching (CST) is rooted in Scripture, formed by the wisdom of Church leaders, and influenced by grassroots movements. It is our moral compass, guiding us on how to live out our faith in the world.
The CST principles which inspire our work are:
Our faith calls us to love God and to love our neighbours in every situation, especially our sisters and brothers living in poverty. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we hope to make present in our unjust and broken world, the justice, love and peace of God.
