It has been another BUSY start to Term 2 at Monivae.  We have seen many student-led initiatives such as those mentioned below, also seen students thrive and display resilience in activities such as House Cross Country, Cadet Camp, Year 10 camp and Year 10 Work Experience.  I loved visiting the cadets out at camp and some year 10 students in different work experience environments.  I must admit, it was my first time at the Hamilton saleyards to visit two students working in the Stock Agent field, it was an eye opener!  It is amazing to see students doing so well and pursuing their dreams both in and out of the classroom.

IDAHOBIT Day

A big thanks to Emily Anderson from headspace Hamilton, who spoke at this week’s assembly about the importance of IDAHOBIT day and how our students can all be allies to those in the LGBTQIA+ community.  IDAHOBIT Day, or the Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination is celebrated on May 17th.  Emily spoke about diversity and inclusion and why this is so important for all communities.  We have also focused our POD activities on celebrating diversity this week and have heard from inspirational athletes about their journeys towards acceptance.

Gender Diversity and SchoolTV

SchoolTV have released some new resources and information onto our Monivae community SchoolTV portal around the topic of gender diversity. There are great short videos and tips for parents/carers when having conversations around gender diversity at home.

There is also a great resource from Amnesty International, which also discusses practical ways to be an ally, I particularly like the section on ways to ‘call out’ inappropriate conversations or language and how to be an upstander, rather than a bystander.

Do It For Dolly Day

Well done to Hartzer House for bringing awareness to this important initiative, focusing on bullying and the impacts of bullying on people. We had a number of activities in POD time focusing on ‘Random Acts of Kindness’.  It was great to hear of so many students doing a small act of kindness for others, whether it be opening the door for someone, cooking tea at home or even buying a friend a mini pizza from the canteen, these are the behaviours that we want to promote and encourage every day.
