Check out the MacKillop Class of 2025!
Our Year 12 students received their Class of 2025 Leavers jumpers recently. A special tradition that acknowledges them as leaders of the College as they embark upon their final year at MacKillop Catholic College.
How great do they look!
What a beautiful day for Cross Country!
Recently, all students enjoyed the opportunity to run, skip, hop or walk around Risdon Brook Dam for the annual MacKillop Cross Country Carnival. It was fantastic to see students cheering on their peers and showing plenty of House spirit.
A big well done to all students for their efforts today, and thank you to all staff who helped make this event such a success.
Learning from the professionals
Local fine art and commercial photographer Rosie Hastie visited MacKillop College to deliver an inspiring workshop, sharing insights into her career and creative practice. Senior Visual Art and Media Studies students, along with Year 10 students, had the opportunity to nominate themselves for this valuable session, aimed at deepening their understanding of fine art photography.
Rosie guided students through examples of her own work, emphasizing the importance of lighting, visual metaphors, and materials in the photographic process. She also shared how she navigates the balance between her commercial work—such as corporate and wedding photography—and her passion for fine art photography. One of the most captivating discussions centered on her artist residencies in Berlin and Istanbul, where students were intrigued by the dynamics of living and working in a foreign country, culminating in an exhibition.
Following the discussion, students were encouraged to experiment with lighting, cameras, and backdrops to create their own compositions inspired by Rosie’s approach. In no time, a series of stunning contemporary landscapes and ethereal spaces emerged, as students eagerly embraced her techniques. Several senior students also took the opportunity to share their own works, receiving valuable guidance and advice to shape their artistic journeys moving forward.
And they're off!
Our 2025 Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod team left Hobart this week as they head off to put their months of hard work into practice on the stage. We can't wait to hear all about their adventures and wish them the best of luck with their performances.
日本からの話 Reporting from Japan
カパチノア Noah Capaci
So far, Japan has been amazing. めちゃめちゃたのしい!。 (Totally, totally fun! )
When we arrived, we were greeted at the airport by Don, the Exchange Program Coordinator in Japan, and students from the older IB classes. I tried to speak as much Japanese as I could... and it worked pretty well! I have been having most of my conversations in Japanese or at least attempting to. Sota and Kei, my two closest Japanese friends that I've made here, have been teaching me new grammar and vocabulary almost every day! I'm really enjoying it.
I have been studying most nights that I can and have finished the textbooks that we were given. The hardest part is learning new vocab.
School has been interesting. The first week, we didn't have any classes. It was a great opportunity to make connections. Everyone is so nice and supportive!
Our actual classes so far have not been as expected. When going into the program I thought we would primarily have classes specifically for Japanese, but that's not been the case so far. I'm not entirely disappointed, rather surprised. The students in the class are CRAZY! Not what I expected from Japan AT ALL. To be fair though, none of the kids in my class are Japanese. (Not fully at least).
I have spent a LOT of money so far but luckily have ticked off most of my gift buying for the trip. My first home stay was really enjoyable! I really enjoyed staying with Sota and his family. It was an amazing opportunity to experience real Japanese home life. I feel like I am learning a lot, and the experience has already proven worth it.
Year 10 Retreat
As part of their transition week and placement activities, some of our Year 10 students traveled to Ninja Stadium today to listen to Sam Clear speak as part of their Year 10 Retreat.
Sam recounted his time completing the Walk4One, a 15,600km walk through South America, Central America and North America, as he trekked on foot from Brazil to Spain. This walk for unity gained international attention.
