Grade 1/2 Cohort - Yarning Circles

This term, the Grade 1/2s have been participating in a Yarning Circle once a week during Circle Time. A Yarning Circle is a traditional practice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people used for learning, sharing, building relationships and passing on cultural knowledge through story telling. As a cohort, this time has been useto learn Indigenous songs and discuss how students can foster respectful relationships. One way we have done this is by introducing a Yarning Stick, whereby, whoever has the Yarning Stick is the person talking, whilst other students listen.  The students have greatly enjoyed coming together in this way each week and will enthusiastically continue to engage in these Yarning Circles for the remainder of the term.

Reconciliation Day

At our school, we acknowledge Reconciliation Day as a time to reflect on the importance of building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Reconciliation Day is a significant occasion that marks the start of National Reconciliation Week, and it encourages all Australians to learn about our shared history, including the injustices experienced by First Nations peoples. By recognising Reconciliation Day, we show our commitment to understanding, respect, and truth-telling. It is an important step toward healing, unity, and creating a more inclusive future for everyone. Through classroom discussions, activities, and ceremonies, we honour the cultures, contributions, and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
