Year 3

Grade 3 have had a really fun start to the year with our teachers and classmates! We have been busy learning lots of new things and getting to know our classroom routines.

In reading and writing, we are reading the book Brindabella. We are using it to practise our reading skills like making predictions, asking questions and finding clues in the text. We are also using the story to help us with our writing by sharing ideas, describing characters and writing our own responses.

In maths, we are learning about place value and working with bigger numbers. We have also started learning about chance and talking about whether events are impossible, unlikely, likely or certain.

In humanities, we are learning about rules and laws and why they are important in our school and community. In science, we are learning about living, non-living and once living things, and sorting them into groups.

We are also loving our specialist lessons! We have been enjoying drama, ICT, French, PE and music each week. It has been a great start to the year and we are having lots of fun learning together in Grade 3. We can’t wait to see what else we learn next!

Year 4

Welcome to another exciting year at Brookside College!

Here’s a look at what we’ve been learning in the Year 4 space.

Reading

In Reading, students explored what their dream reading space might look like and shared their ideas through drawings. We have also begun reading our mentor text, His Name Is Walter, written by the well-known author of the Deltora Quest series. Students are already enjoying this fun and mysterious story. Throughout the term, they will focus on predicting, analysing, and exploring descriptive language, which will also support their writing.

Writing

In Writing, students have started our narrative unit. They are using their creativity to write engaging stories. Our focus includes spelling, grammar, and using simple and complex sentences. Students are also learning about narrative structure by developing characters, settings, problems, and solutions, using skills they practise during Reading.

Science and Humanities

In Science, students are learning about biology, with a focus on living and non-living things. In Humanities, we are exploring different types of government.

Mathematics

In Maths, students have been focusing on place value using place value houses. They have also enjoyed playing a range of maths games in class, including games with students from other classes.

We have had a very positive start to the year and are excited about what’s still to come in Year 4.

What our students are saying:

  • “I feel really good about it, and I really like how my teacher teaches us.” – Sarah

Year 5

In Year 5 we have had a positive and busy start to Term 1. Students have settled into their learning routines and are showing great enthusiasm across all subject areas.

In Reading, we have begun studying the novel Boy Overboard. Students are exploring the characters, themes and important events in the story, while developing their comprehension skills. We have been practising how to make predictions and connections, summarise chapters and discuss the messages the author is sharing about family, courage and hope. In Writing, our focus has been on creating engaging narratives. The Year 5s are learning the importance of characterisation, vivid settings, and using descriptive language. We have also begun learning various spelling rules to apply to our writing.

In Maths, we have started the year with place value and statistics. Students have beenr evising how to read, write and represent large numbers, as well as ordering and comparingt hem. In Statistics, we have explored how to collect, display and interpret data using tables and graphs.

In Science, our unit focuses on biological science and habitats. Students are investigating how living things depend on their environments to survive and how changes to habitats can affect plants and animals. We have enjoyed researching different ecosystems and the features that make them unique.

In Humanities, we are learning about Civics and Citizenship. Students are exploring the meaning of citizenship and the rights and responsibilities of different kinds of citizens. We are also examining the legal rights and responsibilities of citizens in Australia and discussing how people can contribute positively to their communities.

In Health, our focus has been on online safety. The Year 5s have been learning how to stay safe when using digital technologies, how to protect personal information and how to act respectfully and responsibly online.

We look forward to a wonderful term of learning ahead!

Kind regards,

Year 6

The Grade 6 students have launched into the 2026 school year with confidence and enthusiasm! It has been wonderful to see students building new friendships, reconnecting with familiar faces, and getting to know their teachers through a range of fun games and “get to know you” activities. The positive energy in our classrooms has set a fantastic tone for the year ahead.

Here’s what we’ve been learning:

Reading

Students are developing their comprehension skills through an engaging text study of Skellig by David Almond. The class has already begun inferring characters traits, and analysing deeper meanings within the story.

Writing

Our focus is on narrative writing. Students have been crafting exciting story hooks and experimenting with rich, descriptive language to bring their ideas to life — and creativity has certainly been flowing!

Maths

We’ve begun the year exploring place value, including decimals, as well as data. Students have also been conducting probability experiments and recording their results as fractions — hands-on learning in action!

In our other learning areas, students are exploring habitats and animal adaptations in science, learning about the different levels of government in Humanities, and developing their understanding of cyber safety and what it means to be responsible digital citizens in Health.

According to many of our students, the highlight of Grade 6 so far? SPORT! They’ve loved trying new activities and are already counting down to their next session.

We’re so proud of the way students have started the year and can’t wait to see all the growth and achievements ahead.
