Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

Garden
Our garden is looking amazing even with the hot weather. We had three new wicking beds donated by Rotary club last year and two were installed in term four and the other one over the holidays. The tomatoes, corn, pumpkin, beans, chilli, sunflowers, beetroot and cucumbers are growing fast.
Our new hothouse that was donated by Lions club is installed and will keep our seedlings warm over the cooler months.
If you have any coffee grounds or clean egg shells, our garden would love them. They can be left on the old BBQ near the chook pen
Chooks
All of our chickens have successfully made it through the hot summer, and three of the younger hens have now started laying eggs.
The students have named each of the chickens (Bushfire, Dust, Chicky, Henny Penny, Mango, Angel) and they are loved and cared for every day. We have a roster to ensure they are let out each morning, feed and clean water and the Stone family kindly locks them up each afternoon to make sure they are safe and secure for the evening.
There has been an upgrade of the fence around the chook pen near the gardening shed. Thank you to my husband, son and friend who collected it and installed it.
Kitchen
Our Year 3 students have had a great start in the kitchen and have been learning all about knife safety and the various knife skills that can be employed to prepare the produce from our garden. We have been enjoying a range of recipes depending on the competences of the students, including some Asian dishes to celebrate Lunar New Year... the spring onion pancakes were a hit! The Year 3/4 students prepared some delicious herb scones for sampling on Open day by students and visitors, using newly taught cross chopping skills to prepare the rosemary, oregano, parsley and thyme. Delicious!
If you would like to access the recipes used, you will find them in the SAKG Google Classroom. Encourage your child to use their skills by helping at home... they are very good at doing the dishes!!!
