SAKG NEWS

With the recent warm weather the kitchen and garden have been very busy.  Given the harvest has  been plentiful a lot of preserving and freezing has been taking place.

For this rotation kids in the kitchen have been cooking up another zucchini storm, making cannelloni with zucchini ribbons.  The large zucchini that we are getting from the garden are ideal for this purpose, and the kids have been doing an amazing job making long ribbon strips and the wrapping the filling up to bake.   To go with the cannelloni we have also been making coleslaw, using home grown cabbages, and I must say that fresh coleslaw beats anything that you can buy in the shop!  We have also been making savoury damper rolls or scones, using up some of the dehydrated chives and rosemary that we saved from our garden last year.   Some of the kids have been cooking up batches of Ratatouille using excess zucchini and various vegetables including tomatoes from the garden, which we will freeze to use in lasagna later in the term.  And last but not least, we have been preserving some plums for later in the year, also using some of the plums from our fruit trees to make braided plum danishes.  The plums are beautifully sweet and juicy and the danishes have gone down very well.

Out in the garden a big focus has been on pollination of our corn and germination.  Pollination is used particularly when you done when you don’t have many corn plants and you want to increase your yield and involves cutting off the tassels and shaking them directly over the silks. With regards to germination students have been planting seeds for our autumn and winter crops.  Students have also been picking and freezing plums because of their abundance and so we have them available later in the year when they are not in season. And finally our animals have been receiving extra care and cuddles particularly given the warm weather.  Ensuring they have plenty of food and water has been the key.

To finish off our SAKG news we would like to thank all those families which paid Jodie and Mrs O’Brien a visit out in the garden during our “open house” on Monday night.  The animals were definitely a hit along with sampling some fresh produce from our plum tree.  We hope that you enjoyed your time in the garden and look forward to some of you taking up the opportunity to volunteer in the program.  We desperately need help and promise that the experience will be very rewarding.  If you are interested but didn’t receive an information sheet please contact Mrs O’Brien, Jodie, Kate or the ladies in the office.
