White Rocks Farm Visit

This week the Year 12 Animal Production students visited White Rocks Dairy Farm in Benger.

Students have been studying sustainability and have considered stewardship of natural and farming resources and in particular how farmers can maintain and improve the quality of soil and water. The visit allowed students to see the practical applications of these concepts in a commercial dairy setting.

Firstly, students observed the effluent management system and dams and learnt how these by-products were reused as fertiliser. Students then viewed another section of the farm to learn about the drainage systems they have put in place on their grazing pastures to help address the salinity issues they have experienced.

A special thank you to Mr Michael Partridge for being so generous with his time and allowing us to visit his farm. Students learnt a great deal from the visit.

Plant Structure and Function

Ms Stringer’s Year 10 Plant Production Systems classes have been exploring plant structure this week. They have used little microscopes linked to computers to see many aspects of how plants are made up, that is not possible with the naked eye. It is great to have access to this kind of technology as it is a lot more fun than book work!! After our black-out last week, we are still appreciating all the ways that electricity enables us to enhance our learning.
