Year Seven

Humanities

During our recent humanities classes, students have been exploring the fascinating world of communities, examining human interaction and societal dynamics. Through engaging lessons and thought-provoking discussions, our students have gained an insight into the diverse landscapes of rural and urban communities. Students have investigated the defining characteristics of each type of community, from the bustling streets of urban metropolises to the serene landscapes of rural towns.

Our students have also embarked on a journey through time, investigating how communities evolve and transform over the years. By analysing historical photographs students have discerned the myriad factors that contribute to the evolution of communities, from economic shifts to technological advancements.

Students have also discovered that today's interconnected world, the concept of community extends far beyond geographical boundaries. Our students have delved into the complexities of modern society, uncovering the myriad ways in which we remain connected in an increasingly globalised world. From the seamless flow of information to the interdependence of economies, they have gained a profound understanding of the interconnectedness that defines our modern existence.

Central to our discussions has been the pivotal role of globalisation in shaping our everyday lives. Students have explored how globalisation influences various aspects of society, from cultural exchange to economic goods and services. They have come to appreciate the profound impact of globalisation on our quality of life, recognising its role in fostering innovation, diversity, and collaboration on a global scale.

Mathematics

Welcome to our first official newsletter post for 2024! It has been a successful start to the year where we have set class expectations and commenced assessments through the online platform Essential Assessment, to understand our student’s individual learning needs. This information has been used to create rigorous learning programs, as well as guide our students during Goal Setting to set and achieve personal learning goals.

Throughout Term 1, we will continue with our focus on Number and Algebra, where students have explored several topics including integers, fractions, decimals and the four operations to solve a variety of problems. Students will have a large focus this term on Number and Algebra, before moving on to Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability in Term Two.

On Wednesday 20th March, Year Seven students will be participating in the Numeracy NAPLAN test. The test takes 65 minutes and includes questions from all three strands of the mathematics curriculum. In the lead-up to NAPLAN, we are supporting our students in this process through practice questions and tests, as well as guiding them through the use of the online platform that is used for all NAPLAN tests.

We look forward to a successful year in all things Mathematics.

Spanish

During Term One, Year Seven students will be exploring a Unit of Inquiry called ‘Todo Sobre Mi’ (All About Me). This unit will look at how an individual’s family and relationships can affect their identity and how they are perceived by others. By the end of this unit, students will be able to write simple sentences about their name, age and birthday. They will also be able to identify the members of their immediate family, and share details such as their nationality, personality, and profession. Already this term, we've looked at greetings, the alphabet, classroom instructions, and the calendar!

Engaging in a variety of activities, students will focus on literacy, organisation, note-taking, and communication skills. In order to become well-rounded language learners, we will focus on the four macro-skills of language acquisition: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Spanish lessons won’t just include grammar though! We will also explore the various rich and diverse cultures of Spanish-speaking countries around the world, including their history, geography, and politics. No language class would be complete without an engaging range of music, games, and interactive activities, and ours will be no different! So hold onto your sombreros because it’s going to be a fiesta of music, games, and mucho fun! 🎉

Wood Tech

Hello Saltwater Community,

My name is Asha Forrester and I am thrilled to join Saltwater College as the Design Technology- Woodwork teacher, secondary.

Year seven students have been working hard this term, to understand and consider all aspects of work shop safety, and the safe operation of hand tools and machinery.

In saying that, I am pleased to announce that the entire cohort passed the safety written test, and are operating in the workshop in a safe and mature manner!

Year 7 students are currently mastering the technique of cutting and shaping wood using a range of hand tools, and will create a wooden robot and wooden lamp this term.

Stay tuned for more photos of the endless creative possibilities that can be found in Design Technology!
