DEVOTION

We live in a world of slogans, messages and online posts. We appreciate things that can be said succinctly. My first phone was a Nokia 3315 and I remember choosing my words carefully to keep to 160 characters or less, before it spilled over into a new message. That was serious business around the turn of the millennium.

The Bible is a long and dense book with a long history. It is not easily summarised. Like life, it is more complex and mysterious than that. Context matters and there is always more to learn. No one is an expert in the Bible. Everyone is a student. But one task of Christian schools and teachers, pastors and churches, is to communicate the message of the Bible in words that can be understood.

With that goal in mind, many Christians have turned to John 3:16 as a helpful summary: “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” There it is in 125 characters. It would have fit comfortably into a text message on my Nokia 3315.

The meaning of those words would take longer to unpack and understand, perhaps a whole lifetime. But they remind us, in short, that we have a God who loves us. He sent his Son for us and invites us to believe in him. It also reminds us that each student, parent and staff member at Living Waters, however tall or small, is important to God and this community.
