Term 1 Sports

All sport is well and truly underway this term with over 400 students taking up the challenge to represent the College. Team sVc is well represented across a range of sports including SSATIS Basketball and Tennis, Team Sailing and development programs for Tennis, Mountain Bike, Sailing and Athletics. The development programs for both Mountain Bike and Sailing have required some alterations to the structure in order to cater for their growing popularity. Further details around Water Polo will be released shortly. Thank you to all the Senior School staff for their dedication and willingness to support our students and their sporting pursuits.

Registrations for Term 2 Sport will be sent out in the coming weeks.

Southern SATIS Athletic Carnival

Congratulations to House Dwyer on winning the 2024 Annual House Athletics Carnival that was conducted on Friday 23 February. Such a fantastic day with all students giving their all for House bragging rights. Following the carnival and subsequent training, our strong Team sVc with 74 members has been selected to participate in the Southern SATIS Athletics Carnival being conducted at the Domain Athletic Centre on Tuesday 12 March. Full results will be available on the SATIS website. The College Sport Facebook page will have highlights and photos from the day. The team participating at the State SATIS Athletics Carnival at the Domain on Friday 22 March will be named later next week. Students are strongly encouraged to attend athletics training where possible.

Race Walking

Congratulations to Oliver Morgan (Year 11) for winning a bronze medal recently at the 2024 Chemist Warehouse Australian (and Oceania) Race Walking Championships (U18 5km Race Walk) in Adelaide.

Surf Life Saving

Congratulations to Riley O'Connor (Year 9) who was awarded the Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year at the Tasmanian Junior Surf Life Saving Championships 2024 at Clifton Beach over the last weekend.

Rowing

Good luck to Team sVc as they take on the Tasmanian All Schools Championships this weekend and the Head of the River on Saturday 16 March, both at Lake Barrington.

Cricket

Good luck to Team sVc as they will compete with St Patrick's College (Launceston) in Round 5 of the SATIS Statewide 2nd Grade Cricket at GUNN Oval, Pontville on Saturday 9 March. The winner of this match will top the group and earn the right to host the final game the following week. Best of luck!

EREA National Football Tournament

The St Virgil’s College Soccer program seeks to provide players with excellent playing opportunities that will enhance their soccer experiences whilst further reinforcing school spirit and the holistic education provided to all students.

Over the past four weeks we have run trials for Years 7-11 students who wish to be considered for selection to represent the College in two teams for the following divisions, playing in the EREA National Football (Soccer) Tournament:

Year 8 competition (Years 7-8 students to be considered)
Year 9/10 competition (Years 9-11 students to be considered)

Each team will have 16 students selected, they will travel to Brisbane from Tuesday 9 April to Saturday 13 April.

Matches will be played against other EREA schools from across Australia and will be hosted by St Joseph's Nudgee College. Our School has won the Year 9/10 division five times in the past eight years and this is the first occasion that we are sending a team for the Year 8 competition. Recent communications from St Joseph's Nudgee College indicated that over 60 teams from 17 schools across Australia have entered this year. Congratulations to those students who have been selected.

Training for both teams will be conducted every Thursday lunchtime on the Main Oval.
