On Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 February, Dave Jorna from Project Hatch facilitated our Spiritual Retreats for our Years 11-12 students. The retreats are designed to help develop our students’ spirituality, wellbeing and relationships with self, others and God. Our Year 6 students joined the Year 12 students on Thursday morning to engage in activities which encourage and develop leadership. Our Senior students reflected on what it meant to be a Man of Integrity across the two days.
For over 60 years, Caritas Australia has worked hand in hand with the most marginalised and remote communities in Australia and overseas to confront the challenges of poverty. Our college fundraising goes towards supporting these efforts. Later this term, the Senior School will be having a sausage sizzle to raise money for this important cause.
This story of Leaia demonstrates how Caritas makes a difference in developing countries.
Samoa may be a country surrounded by water, but access to clean drinking water is scarce in some areas, with many families facing extreme hardship as a result.
Leaia lives with her five children, husband, brother and sister-in-law on the island of Upolu in Samoa. Not having access to a reliable source of clean water caused Leaia a lot of worry.
Their home is not connected to a piped water system, so they had to rely solely on rainwater collected in old fridges. When their water ran out, Leaia had to walk with her young children to collect water in buckets and containers from a neighbour down the street.
With the support of Caritas Australia's local partner, Caritas Samoa, a water tank was installed at Leaia's home. She and her family now have a steady supply of clean drinking water at home. Next year, they will also have a toilet built, with the support of Caritas Samoa, which will further improve their health and living conditions.
“We are very thankful and grateful for the water tank. It has helped us so much and made our daily life easier,” Leaia said.

Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or do-over, to “return to God with our whole heart.”
It is a time to ask ourselves – “What message do I want to offer others through what I say and do in Lent?”
