GRADE 2 CELEBRATION NEWSLETTER TERM 2 2026

Reading

This term, the Grade 2 students explored fiction and non fiction texts about History. They enjoyed reading fictional history stories based around local and Australian history. As they read, students practised important comprehension skills, including making predictions, connecting stories to their own experiences, making inferences, and retelling key events.

In the second half of the term, students focused on nonfiction texts. They learned how to identify and use text features such as contents pages, headings, diagrams, and labels to help them find and understand information. This helped students build their confidence in reading and learning from informational texts. The nonfiction texts that were selected for this unit were based around their history theme and included reading texts about the history of school, transport, technology and local history.

Writing

This term in Writing, Grade 2 students have been learning how to write complete and simple and compound sentences. They explored nouns, verbs and adjectives, and learned how these work together to create clear sentences. Students practised identifying the difference between sentence fragments and complete sentences, helping them understand the key features needed to communicate their ideas effectively.

As their confidence grew, students progressed from writing simple sentences to creating compound sentences by joining ideas together. They also practised adding descriptive language to make their writing more detailed and interesting. Using the books and texts from their reading lessons as mentor texts, students worked on strengthening their sentence structure and developing their writing skills.

Throughout their Phonics lessons, Grade 2 students continued to develop their handwriting skills by practising correct letter formation and placement using dotted thirds. They’ve been learning to apply their knowledge of letters and sounds for long vowel sounds to spell words.

Mathematics

This term, Grade 2 students have been learning about Place Value, Addition and Subtraction in Mathematics as part of their Number and Algebra units. Students continued to develop their understanding of two- and three-digit numbers by using hands-on materials to show that 3 digit numbers are made up of hundreds, tens and ones. They used this knowledge to explore number patterns and identify numbers that are 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, 10 less, 100 more and 100 less.

During their Addition and Subtraction unit, students learned a range of strategies to solve problems. They explored number bonds and part-part-whole models to help them understand how numbers can be broken apart and put together in different ways. They’ve begun using strategies such as doubles, near doubles and bridging to ten. Students also practised applying these strategies to solve increasingly complex addition and subtraction problems.

In Measurement and Geometry, students learned about length and 3D objects. They used informal units of measurement, such as hands and feet, as well as standard units, to estimate, measure and compare the length of different objects. Students also explored the features of 3D objects and learned to identify and name common 3D shapes.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, the Grade 2 students completed a unit called Past Meets Place. During this unit, students learned about the importance of recognising and preserving aspects of the past within their local community. They’ve learned about places within the local community including the War Memorial and Tab Corp Park. They explored what remains from the past are still important to the community and discussed why these places, objects and stories continue to matter.

Students also investigated how technology has shaped daily life in the community over time. They explore how technology has made changes to transport, shopping experiences and communication. They’ve made predictions about how technology may continue to shape people’s lives in the future based on their understanding of how technology has already shaped changes in the community over time.

 Science

Congratulations to all of our Grade 2 students for all that you have achieved in Science during Term 2. During our ‘Physical Changes and Recycling’, students learnt about the observable and tactile properties of materials to classify them; conducted an experiment to record data about the flexibility of different materials; explored how materials can be physically changed to suit a purpose, without altering their composition; examined how the structure of paper and cardboard can be physically changed to suit different packaging purposes; investigated how recycling helps save Earth’s resources by reusing materials like glass, aluminium, and plastic; compared the usability and production of different types of paper.

LOTE

During Term 2, Grade 2 studentsl learnt about: Amusement Parks, Deaf History, HOLM NMF – Movement, My Australian Holiday – Sydney, Use of Space, Back to Basics (Alphabet, Colours, Family), Minibeasts/Bugs, Deaf Artist Study, Acknowledgement of Country and Revision – My Talent.

We started the term in an Amusement Park, where our video showed the visual and expressive elements of Auslan, how body language and facial expressions can be used to indicate scenes such as riding on the Rollercoaster and the Merry Go Round Carousel. The lessons on Deaf History and our Indigenous lessons shared important information and skills about Deaf History/Culture and Australian themes.

With time passing and continued new learning, we organised Back to Basic lessons to revise previous learning, to assist with longer term retention and usage. This was particularly helpful with the younger students.

Art

In Term 2, Year 2 students continued to build their confidence in the art room while strengthening their understanding of routines, expectations and the safe use of materials. They further developed their ability to express ideas through creative and purposeful artworks.

Students began the term by learning about the significance of ANZAC Day, drawing and creating poppy artworks to show respect and remembrance. They explored the symbolic meaning of poppies while refining their drawing and painting skills using a range of materials.

Students were then introduced to the work of Vincent van Gogh, creating expressive flower artworks inspired by his use of bold colour and brushstrokes as part of their Mother’s Day celebrations.

Towards the end of the term, students explored the work of Pablo Picasso. They learned how he created artworks in imaginative and abstract ways and experimented with creating their own portraits using a variety of shapes and perspectives.

It was a positive and engaging Term 2 in Art, with Year 2 students continuing to develop their creativity, skills and confidence.

P.E

This term in Physical Education, our Grade 2 students began with a soccer unit, further developing their passing, dribbling and shooting skills through a range of fun activities, before applying these skills in small modified games with a focus on positioning and decision-making. Students then moved into a short athletics unit, focusing on relay racing, where they built on their teamwork, running techniques and understanding of race strategies. They also took part in activities such as egg and spoon races and balancing tennis balls on tennis racquets, helping them develop coordination, balance and control. Later in the term, students took part in a teamwork unit, where they continued to develop their ability to communicate, collaborate and support one another through games such as tunnel ball and dodgeball. It has been great to see their progress this term, and I look forward to seeing our Grade 2 students continue to grow next semester!
