Dear families,
Democracy in Action at WPS
Yesterday, our Grade 5/6 students brought their Inquiry unit on government and democracy to life as Williamstown Primary School headed to the polls.
Over recent weeks, students have explored Australia's democratic system, formed political parties and developed campaign platforms before presenting their ideas to the school community. It was wonderful to see students enthusiastically engaging in the electoral process and exercising their right to vote.
A big thank you to all the families who supported the day. Whether you were helping cook sausages for our Democratic BBQ or joining the queue to cast your vote, your support helped make the event a memorable and authentic learning experience for our students.
I would also like to acknowledge our Grade 5/6 students and staff for the significant amount of work that went into organising and running the day.
I now look forward to meeting with representatives from the successful party to negotiate their opportunity to "run the school" for the day. I am sure they will have plenty of ideas, and I look forward to seeing which initiatives make it across the negotiating table!
It was a fantastic example of student voice, leadership and learning in action, and another reminder that our Willy Kids are developing the skills and dispositions needed to be active and informed citizens.
Student Leaders Continue to Shine
One of the many highlights of our School Council meetings continues to be the regular presentations from our Grade 6 Student Leaders. These presentations provide our student leaders with an authentic opportunity to share the many initiatives, events and achievements taking place across the school, while also giving School Councillors valuable insights into life at Williamstown Primary School from a student perspective.
I continue to be incredibly proud of the way our students conduct themselves when presenting. They are consistently engaging, well-prepared and confident, demonstrating impressive public speaking skills and a genuine passion for their school. Their ability to communicate with adults, answer questions and speak so positively about their experiences is a credit to themselves, their teachers and their families.
Our School Councillors regularly comment on how much they enjoy hearing from the students and how impressed they are by the maturity, enthusiasm and pride our leaders display. These presentations are a wonderful example of student voice in action and highlight the important role our students play in shaping and celebrating our school community.
Well done to all of our Grade 6 Student Leaders. You continue to represent Williamstown Primary School with pride and distinction.
Student Conferences – Tuesday 23rd June
A reminder to families that Student Conferences will be held on Tuesday 23rd June from 1:00pm to 7:00pm. All students will be dismissed at 12:30pm on this day.
Bookings are currently open via Compass, and we encourage families to secure a time that suits them.
Please note:
We look forward to these important conversations and the opportunity to celebrate student learning and discuss goals for the second half of the year.
Semester One Reports Available Friday
A reminder to families that Semester One reports will be available to access via Compass from 4:00pm on Friday 19th June.
Due to the recent industrial action and associated work bans, reports this semester do not include general comments. Reports will include achievement standards and progression points in line with the Department's reporting requirements during this period.
Families will also notice the absence of Music progression points. Unfortunately, due to Faye's extended leave, Music progression points were unable to be completed in time for this reporting cycle. These progression points will be finalised and made available to families by the end of Week 2, Term 3.
We appreciate the understanding and support of our community and look forward to discussing student progress further during our upcoming Student Conferences.
Warm regards,
Mat Montebello
