Tournament of Minds Excursion to MOD and Samstag Museum

Gallery Image

On Friday 12th of June, the Year 5/6 and 7/8 Tournament of Minds teams attended an excursion and workshop at the MOD and Samstag Museums. The students began with a tour of the MOD and were challenged to think creatively with the interactive exhibitions that focused on the theme of "Beginnings."

This was followed by a talk by two university researchers on how to begin the research process. The students then took a short walk to the Samstag Museum, where they completed a mini Arts challenge by creating a chant and masks for a protest movement.

The Year 5/6 team's protest was on pollution in the ocean, while the Year 7/8 team chose to focus on the dangers of AI.

It was a fantastic experience for students to prepare them for the Tournament of Minds competition next term, and according to one Year 5, it was the "Best. Day. Ever!"

Career Focus: Psychology/Counselling

Students in Years 10–12 with an interest in Psychology and Counselling recently attended a Career Focus session featuring a panel of professionals working in the field.

This session provided students with a unique insight into careers that are often difficult to observe firsthand. Panel members included Tash, Jarrad and Mel from our own Counselling Team, along with Clinical Psychologist Josh Peters. Together, they shared their personal pathways into the profession, discussed the rewards and challenges of their roles, and provided students with a realistic picture of what the work entails.

Students gained an understanding of the differences between counselling and psychology roles, as well as the wide range of specialisations available within psychology, including assessment, educational psychology, profiling, trauma-informed practice and research. The panel also highlighted the strong future demand for professionals in this sector, with significant growth predicted across mental health and wellbeing services.

A particularly valuable takeaway for students was the insight into the personal qualities required for success in these professions. Panel members spoke about the importance of being able to sit with people’s difficult stories, process challenging situations, maintain professional boundaries and, at times, set aside personal beliefs to support clients with empathy and respect.

The session helped students better understand the diverse opportunities available within the field while highlighting the skills, qualifications and resilience needed for success. Students left with an appreciation of the impact Psychology and Counselling professionals have on individuals and communities, as well as practical advice for pursuing future study and career pathways.

Many thanks to Tash, Jarrad, Mel and Josh for generously sharing their time, experiences and expertise with our students.

Year 12 Drama Performance - 'A fortunate life'

Congratulations to the seven Year 12s students on their drama performance of 'A Fortunate Life'.

Our talented students brought these characters vividly to life on stage. Congratulations to them all on a moving and memorable performance!

'A fortunate life' is a powerful story of a young boy left parentless, who began working at just eight years old on the rugged frontier of Western Australia. From the hardships of rural life to surviving the gore of Gallipoli, enduring the loss of his home during the Depression, and facing tragedy in World War II, his journey is one of resilience and perspective.
