Our Foundation students recently enjoyed a wonderful excursion to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre. The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to learn more about Kaurna culture, history, and connection to Country through hands-on activities and exploration.
During the first activity, students learnt about traditional Kaurna art symbols and how symbols can be used to tell stories and share meaning. They then decorated their own boomerangs using different symbols to create a special story. Students showed great creativity and enthusiasm while completing their designs.
The second activity was a guided nature walk through the Warriparinga Wetlands. Our guide shared interesting information about the history of the land, native Australian animals, bush tucker, and the importance of caring for the environment. Students also learnt some Kaurna language, including Warri Parri meaning “windy river.” They were excited to discover how language helps keep culture and traditions strong.
The excursion was a fun and engaging learning experience for all students. We learnt many new things and developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and traditions. The visit also connected closely with our current HASS topic, “Special Places,” as students were able to explore why Warriparinga is an important place for the Kaurna people.
