Year 1/2 – Term 3 Overview
Welcome to Term 3!
We hope you all had a wonderful break and enjoyed some quality time with family and friends. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back and continuing to build on the fantastic learning that took place during the first half of the year.
Throughout the term, our Year 1/2 students will continue to build their knowledge, skills and confidence through engaging, hands on and connected learning experiences. Our learning is carefully connected across the curriculum, allowing students to make meaningful links between what they are reading, writing, investigating and creating.
We are excited to see our students continue to grow as confident learners, problem solvers and thoughtful members of our classroom community. As always, we appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to working in partnership with you throughout the term.
Reading
This term, students will continue to strengthen their reading skills through our daily Little Learners Love Literacy and Heggerty lessons. Alongside building fluency and confidence, students will participate in targeted teacher focus groups that respond to their individual learning needs. Students will also explore a range of comprehension strategies, including making connections, asking questions, inferring, summarising and reflecting. These strategies will encourage students to think deeply about what they read, make meaningful connections and confidently share their ideas with others as they continue to grow as readers.
Writing
Our writing focus this term is persuasive texts. Students will learn how authors persuade an audience by sharing an opinion supported with clear reasons and examples. Throughout the term, students will explore persuasive language and text features while continuing to strengthen their sentence structure, punctuation, vocabulary and editing skills. They will have many opportunities to plan, draft, revise and publish their own writing while building confidence as young authors.
Content
Our Content learning this term begins with Science, where students will investigate Earth's resources and explore how we can reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle to help care for our environment. Through hands on investigations, students will observe, sort and classify materials, identify patterns, collect information and communicate their findings using scientific vocabulary.
Later in the term, our Content learning will move into Digital Technologies, where students will investigate how digital systems work and explore how technology can be used to create, communicate and solve problems. Students will have opportunities to create, investigate and collaborate using a range of digital tools while developing the confidence and skills to use technology safely and responsibly.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will continue to build their confidence through practical and engaging learning experiences. This term, they will develop their understanding of fractions by exploring halves and quarters before investigating multiplication and division through hands on activities and problem solving tasks.
Students will also deepen their understanding of time, including calendars, seasons and the duration of events, before exploring location and direction later in the term. We will continue to encourage students to explain their thinking, use mathematical language and apply their learning to real life situations.
Social and Emotional Learning
Our Social and Emotional Learning lessons will continue through the Respectful Relationships program. Students will develop strategies to recognise and manage their emotions, build positive friendships, ask for help when needed, celebrate diversity and show respect, kindness and responsibility both in and out of the classroom.
Together, we will continue to build a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every child feels valued, respected and connected.
NAIDOC Week
During Week 2, we will celebrate NAIDOC Week across all learning areas. Students will explore this year's theme through stories, discussions and engaging learning experiences that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives. Throughout the week, we will focus on Caring for Country, encouraging students to think about how we can all contribute to looking after our environment, our community and one another. This learning will be woven throughout our Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Content and Social and Emotional Learning lessons, providing meaningful opportunities for students to learn from and celebrate the world's oldest continuing cultures.
Looking Ahead
We have another wonderful term ahead with exciting events, including Book Week and Education Week, providing students with opportunities to celebrate reading, creativity and learning alongside their classmates.
In Week 7, our Year 1/2 students will participate in the Swimming Program. This is always a highlight of the term and provides students with valuable opportunities to build confidence in the water while developing important swimming and water safety skills. More information about the program, including session times, requirements and permission details, will be shared with families closer to the time.
