International Student Update

A Smooth Transition from the Language Centre to Mainstream Learning
On 12 June, students from the Language Centre graduated and began their mainstream classes on 15th June. To support students during this important transition, both staff and students across the school have provided outstanding guidance and encouragement.
Supporting from ISP Team
To help students settle into mainstream learning, Ms Podesser, the Year Level Coordinator for International Students, prepared two special support forms. The first is the Equipment Check Form, which helps students make sure they bring all the required learning materials to each class. The second is the Daily Learning Check-in Form. In each class, teachers sign the form to record students’ classroom behaviour and whether their homework is up to date.
In addition, the multicultural aide, Ms Ji, attended most of these students’ classes to support their transition into mainstream learning. She helped students understand daily classroom routines and teachers’ expectations. Ms Ji also provided language and cultural support to ensure they could participate in class and engage with their learning.
Warm Welcomes from Teachers
Before entering mainstream classes, students were asked to introduce themselves by email to all of their subject teachers. They received friendly and encouraging replies from teachers across the school.
Once classes began, teachers continued to show great care and support. They encouraged students to answer questions, join discussions, and take part in classroom activities. During group work, many teachers thoughtfully placed Language Centre graduates with local students, helping them feel included and comfortable.
One memorable example came from science class. Ms Bruce invited the entire class to stand in a circle on the lawn, where everyone took turns introducing themselves. It was a simple activity that helped students connect and learn more about one another.
Students Supporting Students
Local students have also been incredibly welcoming and helpful.
In Mr Watters’ Year 9 Physical Education class, Sam enthusiastically taught international students how to play volleyball and demonstrated the correct techniques. Poppy and Emily consistently encouraged Christine and Michelle to practise serving and participate actively in the game. Their kindness and support made a big difference and helped new students feel part of the community.
Rising to the Challenge
At the same time, the Language Centre graduates have showed excellent learning attitudes and classroom behaviour. They have continued to prepare for lessons, take notes, complete homework on time, and actively engage in their learning. They have worked hard to meet the expectations of mainstream learning.
Looking Ahead
Starting mainstream classes can feel challenging, but thanks to the support of coordinators, teachers, local students, and the hard work of the graduates themselves, the transition has been smooth and successful.
We wish all of our Language Centre graduates all the best in their future studies and school life.
