Around the School
SPECIAL VISIT.
On Wednesday 8th of May 2024, Year 3 / 4 had two special visitors.
Shakira Winmar and her cousin Aslan came to our school to tell us about Shakira designing a football jumper for the Indigenous Round for the East Point Football Club. Shakira explained about the symbols on the jumper. There were kangaroo footprints and the willy wagtail, which is her family totem.
Aslan played the didgeridoo ( also known as the Yidaki or ‘noisy stick’), which was brilliant. He explained that in the aboriginal culture, only men play the Yidaki.
Shakira discussed what it was like having a famous dad ( Nicky Winmar) and how he is still recognised today, long after retiring from AFL football. Importantly we learnt that we should be respectful of the Aboriginal culture. It was a sensational visit which we all enjoyed.
