STEM News

Welcome to our STEM-packed newsletter!

As we start another term filled with innovation and discovery, let's take a moment to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). From creative projects to hands-on experiments, it's been an exciting journey!

Preps' Makedo Marvels and Coding Capers - Our Preps have been on a double journey of creativity and coding this term! Alongside their fantastic creations using the Makedo tools, they've also been honing their coding skills with our resident Beebots. These adorable robots have been buzzing around the Beebot mats under the guidance of our young programmers. From navigating the cow to the barn door with purpose to exploring other exciting routes, our Preps are becoming coding champions one step at a time! Their enthusiasm for learning knows no bounds, and we couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments. Keep coding and creating, Preps!

Year 1/2s' Digital Expedition - Meanwhile, our Year 1/2 students have been embarking on a digital expedition around the globe using Google Maps and diving into the realms of robotics and magnetic tiles. Our young explorers have been delving into the intricacies of programming with Beebots, maneuvering them around with precision and purpose. They've also been constructing imaginative structures with magnetic tiles, unlocking endless possibilities with each connection. And let's not forget about our dynamic duo, Bill and Ben, the robots who've been lending a hand (or two!) in their technological journey.

3/4s' Green Thumb Ventures - In the world of landscaping, our 3/4 students have been flexing their green thumbs with the Gardena online tool. They've been tasked with designing gardens that meet a client's brief, showcasing their creativity and attention to detail. Additionally, they've partnered with industry experts, Miss Racahel and Dr. Megan Sebben, to design habitats that support our local ecosystems—a true testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Grade 5/6s' Martian Odyssey - The Grade 5/6 students have embarked on an interstellar journey, engineering their own Mars Landers. Balancing suspension and safety, they've ensured their 'astronauts' (marshmallows) land on the red planet without a hitch. Their meticulous planning and engineering prowess have truly impressed!

Upcoming Events

Friday 28th June - Mark your calendars for the highlight of the term—a STEAM day extravaganza on the last day of term! Get ready for a day filled with hands-on activities, workshops, and exploration across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

Friday 7th June - MACS STEM MAD Poster Competition - Students are invited to design a poster or digital animation to promote the STEM MAD Showcase. Winners will have their poster displayed at the Showcase, and component images may be used in

marketing materials and media. Please see the flyer for more information. Entries are to be submitted to Miss Rachael by Friday 7th June - rbulcock@scelwood.catholic.edu.au
