SLA

The SLA’s have had a busy start to term 3 and have participated in some exciting things. On Monday July 28th some of our SLA students welcomed AFL Carlton players Harry Mckay, Blake Acres, Nick Haynes and Jack Carroll. Students participated in a Q&A, signing of memorabilia and an informal kick-to-kick facilitated by Brad from AFL headquarters.
April: I liked it when we all did the big group photo because everyone was together. It was interesting to hear them say which teams they followed when they were younger and only one actually followed Carlton!
Grace: I liked how we got to play footy with them after we asked them questions about their career and when they started playing. I’m a big Carlton supporter so I was so happy that they sent Carlton players to come and visit us.
Max: We had a very good time asking the Carlton players questions. After the questions we got to have a kick with the footy, it was really fun, we had a really good time. I learnt that Blake Acres gets really nervous before games.
This week some of our SLA students held a ‘bake sale for SJW staff as part of their ‘Acts of Service’ initiative. Other students held a market stall for students selling hand made items such as key-rings and bracelets. A total of $444.85 was raised with all proceeds being donated to charities - A Worthy Cause, Minnie Vinnies and Berry St.
Joanna: I baked chocolate chip cookies and Amelia baked brownies. It was very fun and tiring baking all the cookies, I hope the staff enjoyed them as we made them with love. We raised just under $200 for our charity!
Celeste: Ella and I made loom band bracelets, we sold them for $1 each, we made $59 for our cause.
Lawrence: Me and Alex shrunk chip packets and we made keyrings out of them. We sold them for $3 each and made a total of $197 for Minnie Vinnies. We would love to do it again to donate more!
As part of our Inquiry Unit - Change and Transformation, students have been learning about energy. They have experimented with making circuits which included a power source, input and output. Students will be conducting a range of experiments in their classes in the coming weeks, and also in Discovery and ICT lessons.
Harlie: We’ve been working on how to create a simple circuit with buzzers, fans, batteries and different types of wire and we’ve recently created torches which we had to design and then create. I learnt that not every single connector works together and that they all connect through magnets that attract and retract.
Adam: We made an electrical circuit, it had little magnetic pieces which was really fun for me because I got to connect three fans at once, and I got to use every resource and it turned out well. I really enjoyed the lesson!
Josh D: I worked with Dylan and we made a circuit, it was pretty hard because we kept on trying to make the light work and it didn’t work so we had to keep adding pieces. In the end it still didn’t work but it was interesting because we got to try lots of ways.
