Leaders of Learning

From the Instructional Speciliast and K-2 and 3-6 Leaders of Learning

The Winter holidays have arrived—a wonderful chance for children to unwind, enjoy quality time with family and friends, play outside (or stay cozy indoors!), and take a well-earned break from the school routine. It’s also a great time to keep the spirit of learning alive in fun, relaxed ways.

One of the best ways to support your child’s development over the break is by encouraging regular reading. To make this more engaging, we’re once again running a Holiday Reading Challenge for both K–2 and Years 3–6. Students who complete the challenge will go into the draw to win a prize!

Reading doesn’t have to be limited to traditional books—listening to audiobooks, sharing a story together, exploring e-books or flicking through comics and magazines all help to build vital literacy skills. Just 10 minutes of reading a day can make a big difference—supporting comprehension, vocabulary, and a lifelong love of stories. Learning truly is a partnership between home and school.

Here are some ideas to keep reading fun during the break:

  • Visit Your Local Library: The Sutherland Shire has nine local libraries offering plenty of holiday programs. It’s the perfect time to borrow some books, explore the Story Box Library, or take part in the Winter activities on offer. Check out the brand new library open at Kirrawee’s South Village.
  • Use School Resources: Students in K–6 can log in to Decodable Readers Australia, a great tool for practising skills. 3-6 students also have access to the SORA online library, which they’ve used during ICT lessons. Please check the attached link for help logging in and borrowing books.
  • Make Reading a Family Affair: Share stories as a family or set aside a regular reading time during the day to read alongside your child.
  • Create a Reading Corner: Set up a comfy, quiet nook at home where your child can enjoy their books without distraction.

And if your child is working toward the Premier’s Reading Challenge, the holidays are a perfect time to tick off a few more books!

Wishing you a warm and restful Winter break filled with joy, family time, and plenty of great stories. Happy reading!
