From the Head of Boarding

MEBS - A Legacy of Excellence

Dear Boarding Community,

Term 3 at MEBS is always a bittersweet time. We farewell our Year 12 Boarders and celebrate their contribution to Boarding and their Colleges. We know it is soon that they will leave us, leaving a void that is felt by the whole MEBS boarding community. For at least two years and some since Grade 7, their faces have formed the fabric of MEBS. Then suddenly they are gone. Focusing on the sweet time - great moments, shared experiences, contributions, social occasions, birthdays - so many positive interactions. We will miss the Senior MEBSters of 2025. We wish them all the best for their upcoming exams and their future.

Study

Boarding programmes provide structured times in which to study -  a quiet and supervised time which allows students to study as part of their College academic programme.

Study can include any one or a number of the following components: ( dependent on each College's homework / study expectations)

  • A Homework assignment set to be completed that night

  • Complete work not finished during class time.

  • Study - revise for a test/ an exam.

  • Finish the work started in Class

  • Short-term assignments

  • Reading

  • A set video to watch for class discussion

  • Reflection - what was taught today/ what do I now know / what do I NOT know?

  • Long-term assignments - folio work

The study support programme at MEBS allows students to study in several ways to support their individual learning programmes:

  1.  Study privately in their own room  -  Year 7 to 12

  2.  Study in a "Study Hall" environment - usually Year 7, 8, and 9

  3.  Study in collaboration with others - Usually Year 10 to 12/ can be coed

Year 7, 8, and 9 Boarders are expected to sign into class from 7 pm to 8 pm with their Online Tutor. The Boarding Supervisor logs in as well - the class can be seen on the screen as part of the supervision process, as well as personal contact/ supervision. Students cannot be made to study - there is a learning and teaching process for the student/ teacher. Communication is an important tool to assist the Boarding Staff, teachers, and parents about the progress of each student. MEBS has a very supportive study in residence programme providing a very sound environment in which to complete work - adaptable to each student's learning style and age group.

Year 11 Examinations

Year 11 exams begin on Monday, 8 September. The Boarding Houses are open during the exam for the Year 11 students to return after exams. Lunches during the exams will be provided by Dave Lugton Catering.

The Year 11's have been given the option of returning to MEBS Sunday Night between 7 pm and 8 pm. There is no dinner provided on Sunday, but there is supper and fruit. A Continental Breakfast is provided on Monday morning.

The Year 11 Boarders can sign in and sign out during the day when not involved in exams or wanting a break from study. Year 11 Mater Dei Drivers may drive to the College for their exams. They are not permitted to carry other passengers.
