Science Term 2 Newsletter

Welcome to Term 2
Hello families,
Welcome back. Across all year levels this term, we will be focusing on Earth and Space Sciences. Students will continue to engage in hands-on investigations where they ask questions, make predictions, and test their ideas just like scientists. Through engaging and practical learning experiences, the focus is on nurturing curiosity, building confidence, and fostering a genuine enjoyment of science.
Foundation:
This term, students will become weather detectives! We're exploring the world around us through daily weather observations and learning how to describe and understand the weather using our senses and simple scientific language. In term 2, students will learn about changes in weather, temperature and different seasons. They will learn about weather symbols and discuss what to wear in different weather conditions. In addition, they will explore how food, plants and animal behaviour change in different seasons. Using their senses, students will investigate different temperatures and track weather patterns, identify seasons, and connect them to activities. They will also explore seasonal fruits and vegetables and learn about animals' migration and hibernation.
Year 1-2:
In Science this term, our Year 1/ 2 students are exploring how to care for Earth’s water, land and air by learning about reducing, reusing and recycling materials. Through hands-on experiences, students are asking questions about the world around them, noticing patterns, and making simple predictions about what might happen next. They are developing their scientific skills by following clear, step-by-step procedures to carry out safe investigations, such as making homemade ice cream and using their senses to make observations. Students are also beginning to record their findings, including informal measurements, sometimes using digital tools to support their learning.
Year 3-4:
In Science this term, our Year 3/4 students are investigating Earth’s natural resources, including rocks, minerals and soils, and how their observable properties make them useful in different ways. They will explore and learn to appreciate how rocks are formed and then test rocks to find their properties, as well as make their own crystals! In addition to this, students will be exploring weather and climate. They will examine how these can impact the land, air, water and living things, and discuss how human activities can influence climate. Through hands-on learning experiences, students are building their understanding of the world around them while developing their observation and inquiry skills.
Year 5-6:
In Science this term, our Year 5/6 students are exploring how sudden geological changes and extreme weather conditions can affect Earth’s surface and atmosphere. They will become experts in some natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis and investigate how human actions and technological innovations can help reduce their impacts. As part of this unit, students will work collaboratively in groups to research a natural disaster, create models to demonstrate how it occurs, and present their learning at a class expo at the end of the term.
