F1 Grand Prix Excursion

Year 9 STEM

Our Year 9 STEM students plus four fabulous parent volunteers recently attended the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, where they experienced STEM in action within a world-class, real-world context.

Throughout the day, students explored the circuit and observed the advanced engineering behind Formula 1 cars. This included applications of forces and motion, energy transformations, aerodynamics, and materials engineering – key concepts studied in class. Students were able to connect their learning to real-life innovations, particularly how engineers optimise speed, safety, and efficiency in high-performance environments.

Students also gained insight into the wide range of STEM careers involved in motorsport, including mechanical engineering, data analytics, and sustainability innovation. Engagement with industry and university displays highlighted the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and iterative design processes.

Our students represented Brighton Secondary College with enthusiasm and maturity in a busy and dynamic environment. The excursion provided a valuable opportunity to extend learning beyond the classroom and inspire future pathways in STEM.

According to the students, some of the highlights from the day was “Meeting Oscar Piastri”, “Seeing how fast the cars could go”, “how close we could get to the cars near the track”, “the floating bridge”, “seeing the robot dog”, “seeing the Uni displays and getting freebies eg hats and key rings”.

The day was made even more special as one of our students with additional needs also had a fabulous day, thanks to their carers, education support team and Grand Prix organisers.

We look forward to building on this experience in upcoming projects this term.
