Tennis Champions
Congratulations to Year 9 students Malek Marouff and Sophie Klettke-Sullivan (pictured above) who won the Division A Section 1 Waverley Junior Tennis Premiership! The team, representing Centenary Park Bentleigh, played matches every Saturday morning for six months, finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder. They had to really battle it out on Grand Final day with two out of the three matches being decided with a super tie break!
Senior Tennis
Our senior tennis team had a great day out lead by Erik Bucko and Savannah James. After not dropping a set, and only a couple of games against Mordialloc, Bentleigh and McKinnon, BSC came up as one of the top contenders for the title. However, a tough fought lost to Sandringham sealed our position as us runners up in senior tennis this year, equal on three sets apiece, but losing overall by just two games.
Savannah James, playing in our number 2 spot and against the boys, did not drop a game, winning all her matches 4-0. Zach Boatto also remained undefeated in singles for the day with both Erik Bucko and Miles Hancox only losing one set each.
An additional congratulations goes to Savannah James who has also just been selected to represent Victoria at the National Schools Tennis Championships.
No stranger to success in the sport, having started playing at the age of three, Savannah moved to Spain to train at a tennis Academy when she was 13. Days were spent on the court and in the gym, nights were spent keeping up to date with schooling. After completing Year 10 at home so she could continue to train, Savannah returned to BSC last year to complete her VCE studies.
This hasn’t slowed her tennis down though, with a big summer that included tournament wins in Benalla and Warrnambool, runners up in Wangaratta and being awarded best player in the Daphne Cup. Having already played in the AO juniors and a regular in the J100 ITF tournaments, Savannah is looking forward to carving a career at college in America next year before hopefully taking on the world of professional tennis.
We look forward to closely following Savannah’s results over the next few years!
