Principal's Report

By Carolyn Serpell & Dave Fraser

Welcome back to term 2!

Chilly mornings and glorious sunshine have made for a welcome start to the new term, and while the trees are looking stunning, it won't be long before our students will be enjoying playing, making cubbies and burying each other in mounds of autumn leaves!

We have a busy term ahead of us and, as winter draws closer, planning for the Year 3-6 ski program is underway. An expression of interest form will be sent home, in the next week, to help inform this planning.

A Surprise Visitor

On Wednesday, we were surprised to discover what was believed to be an Eastern long-necked turtle, exploring our school grounds.  While it was invited to take up residence in our pond, the excitement in the school yard may have proved too much and it vanished as quickly as it appeared, once lunch was over.

Cross Country Running Event

Congratulations to all students on their participation in today's XC event, at Tawonga Park.  While they had limited time to prepare, it has been great to see students challenging themselves in the practise runs over the last week, and giving today's run their very best.

A big thank you to our parent cheer squad and to Tawonga PS and staff from the combined schools, for their efforts in ensuring a fun and successful event. To see more about the cross-country event, please see the Sport/PE page of the newsletter.

ANZAC Day

Yesterday, students in Years 4-6 were visited by RSL president Josh New and vice-president Lisa Russell, who shared about their role in the services and how they are working to build our local RSL, to foster kindness, courage and compassion, and the importance of ANZAC Day.

On Saturday, students (dressed in uniform) and families are invited to join the ANZAC Day March at 10.30am and the service at 11am.  Members of our SRC will also be in attendance, and will lay a wreath on behalf of the school community.

Please note that Monday 27th April is not a public holiday in Victoria, and school and OSHC will be running as normal.

Intergenerational Gardening

Next Wednesday, 29th April, as an extension of our Kitchen Garden program, a group of our students will take part in establishing an intergenerational community garden at the Neighbourhood Centre.  This initiative is a collaboration between Alpine Health, Alpine Shire, the Neighbourhood Centre and ourselves.  Individuals who would like to be part of this project are invited to register their interest by emailing healthpromotion@alpinehealth.org.au or calling 0461 583 388.

Upcoming Events

During May, we have a number of events happening, including an arts performance, the Year 5/6 Wilsons Prom Camp and a P-4 excursion to the Cube, to see a stage show. We greatly appreciate your support in promptly completing consent and payments through Compass, where required.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the office.

2026 Athletics Carnival -volunteers needed

On Friday the 15th of May, we will be hosting the Cluster Athletics carnival for students in Years 3-6. To assist in running this event, we are seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks including starting, timing and cooking our BBQ, which will help raise funds for our school.  If you can help out for an hour or two, please let our office know asap.

2026 Fundraising

You may have seen our Help Us Fundraise flyer in recent school newsletters. This term, our school council fundraising committee is planning a ‘High County Winter Experience’ themed raffle. We are hoping to offer some great prizes from local businesses that appeal to school families and friends within and beyond the local community to extend our fundraising reach. Our Term 2 fundraising efforts will go towards upgrading our fleet of student laptops.

We invite school families to get involved by contributing to our fundraising committee. Please drop past our School Office to find out more.

Alternatively, you may like to partner with a local business to offer a gift voucher in keeping with the Winter Experience theme.

Thank you to Cunningham, Taylor, Gardiner and Travers families for getting the ball rolling with donations towards some great items!

The raffle will run throughout May and be drawn at the start of June, coinciding with the opening of the ski season. Donations gratefully accepted until 30 April 2026.
