Principal's Ponderings

From our Principal - Mr Chad Smit

Wholehearted on the Foundation

As we come to the close of Term 1, there is a deep sense of anticipation across our community. We stand in a moment between what has been and what is about to unfold. A two-week pause (A welcomed holiday and break). A breath. A sacred in-between space where God often does His quiet, yet most significant work.

This week, our students and staff were given a beautiful and memorable opportunity. Together, we stepped into the new Secondary Year 9/10 building, not yet finished, floors still exposed, walls still forming, and as is our tradition since the Jiloa Centre was built, we were invited to write on the floors.

Scriptures.

Prayers.

Declarations.

Hopes for what this space will become.

There was something deeply moving about watching our community kneel, write, reflect, and pray across the very foundation of the building. Words of faith literally laid beneath what will soon be classrooms filled with learning, laughter, and growth. This practice at DCS is more than an activity. It is a declaration.

A declaration that this building is not just constructed on concrete, but on Christ. That every step taken within those walls will be grounded in His truth. That His Word will be the light guiding every pathway.

As Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Before the walls are finished. Before the furniture is placed. Before the doors fully open. The foundation has already been set. Not just physically, but spiritually. And isn’t that the invitation for us as well?

As we head into this break, and as our Year 10 students prepare to step into the Philippines, Alice Springs, and into local opportunities to serve, we are reminded that what we build our lives upon matters most.

Jesus speaks clearly in Matthew 7:24–25, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew… yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Before the going. Before the serving. Before the stepping into new spaces.

We return to the foundation. Because wholehearted living is not first about what we do, it is about what we are built upon. In this season of waiting, there is a quiet invitation.

To be still.

To be grounded.

To be with Jesus.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Even Jesus Himself withdrew to be with the Father before significant moments of ministry. There is wisdom here for us. Before impact comes abiding. Before fruit comes remaining.

In John 15:5, Jesus reminds us, “I am the vine, you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing.”

So as we pause over these next two weeks, we are not stepping away from purpose, we are stepping into preparation. For our students, this is a time to prepare hearts, not just bags. For our staff and families, it is a time to rest, to be renewed, and to trust God with what lies ahead.

And as we look toward Term 2, toward mission, toward new spaces, toward all that God is unfolding, we do so knowing this:

The foundation is firm.

His Word has been written.

His presence has been invited.

His purposes are already in motion.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God is already at work. In the Philippines. In Alice Springs. In our new Secondary building. And in every heart across our community. So we step forward not in our own strength, but in His. With feet guided by His Word. With lives built on His truth. With hearts fully His.

Wholehearted. On the foundation.

Shalom,

Chad
