Requesting Extended Leave

Parents are advised that:

“Students are expected to attend the school in which they are enrolled, during normal school hours every day of each term, unless there is an approved exemption from school attendance or attendance and enrolment for the student.” (Department of Education, Victoria)

Any period of extended leave during a school term for family trips away is not considered "approved leave" and will not meet the Department of Education attendance requirements for school-aged students. Therefore, we discourage families from taking periods of extended leave during school term.

However, if you do need to take your child out of school during term time, we do request that you apply to the Principal for such leave. You can do this by emailing principal@goodnews.vic.edu.au and state the period of leave and reason for the leave. Please do so at least four weeks of term time before your intended leave period begins. Families will receive acknowledgement of this request via Schoolbox.

Reading Reset - Reading in 2025!

Many students (and adults) may have taken a break from reading over the holidays, spending more time scrolling instead. In this digital age, we’re used to consuming snippets of information, but long-form reading is a skill that needs nurturing. When children are young, we read to them; as they grow, they read to us. But once they can read independently, they still need guidance. This stage is crucial. At school, we provide weekly reading periods in Primary and fortnightly in Secondary in the library.

How you can help:

  • Make reading before bed a habit—charge phones outside the bedroom to avoid distractions.
  • If there’s no homework, encourage reading as part of their routine.
  • Talk about books—ask what they’re reading!

At GNLC, we support young readers, but parental involvement is key. By modelling reading, we help children see it as a life skill that opens doors to self-discovery and the world.
