GRADE 3 AND 4

In Term One all Grade Three and Four students were exploring the different states of matter as part of their Chemical Science unit. They explored solids, liquids and gases in our environment. They discussed these ideas by considering and exploring how sand, water, wood, oil and juices as states of matter. Further they investigated how particles are arranged in the three states of matter.  They conducted a few experiments to find out how temperature affects different materials such as, adding and removing heat energy. They learnt new science vocabulary words and phrases such as ‘ice is melting’ and ‘sugar cubes and salt are dissolvable materials’.

GRADE 5 AND 6

In Term One all Grade Five and Six students explored the key features of the states of matter as part of their Chemical Science unit. They investigated reversible and irreversible materials we use in our daily lives. For example, they explored how melting ice is a reversible change. When you heat ice, it turns into water and when you cool the water, it can be frozen again to form ice. Further, they identified common mixtures and solutions we use in every day.  They learnt how to describe homogeneous mixtures and their properties such as solute as solid, solvent as liquid to make a solution.
