Staying Safe Online: A Message for Parents

As part of our commitment to supporting students' digital wellbeing, our ICT sessions this term will focus on essential topics related to online safety, responsible device use, and social media awareness. These lessons will cover:

  • How to stay safe online: Strategies to protect personal information and recognize unsafe situations.
  • Social media and age limits: Discussing why social media platforms require users to be 13+ and the risks involved for younger children.
  • Gaming and online interactions: Exploring healthy screen time habits and ways to engage safely in online gaming environments.
  • School rules and policies: Reinforcing our school's Acceptable Usage Policy for digital devices to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

We strongly encourage parents to join us in reinforcing these important messages at home. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are not designed for children under 13 and expose them to unnecessary risks, including inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and privacy concerns. Supporting this message at home helps protect children and ensures a consistent approach to online safety.

For more information on how to support your child’s online safety, we recommend exploring the following resources:

  • eSafety Commissioner: Australia’s leading authority on online safety with resources for parents.
  • Common Sense Media: Guides and reviews to help parents navigate social media, apps, and games.

By working together, we can create a safer digital environment for all children. If you have any questions or would like further support, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for helping us keep our students safe online.
