Performing Arts

Matt Halford - Performing Arts Teacher

We have welcomed back our wonderful Performing Arts students - and welcomed some new ones - this February.

To introduce our students to all the different types of Dance, Music and Drama from around the world, we have been watching a quick and engaging clip at the start of every lesson - European Folk Dances :

In Foundation, our students have been focussing on keeping the beat, and high and low sounds. For example, they have been exploring a sound story about high and low sounds called Hey Diddle Diddle.

In Year 1, they have been focussing on beat and rhythm. The students have learned the welcoming song Hey Everybody, sung the rhythm song Just Like Me, and moved to the song Reach Up High.

Students in Year 2 have been focusing on long and short sounds and rhythms. They have been responding to long and short sounds by creating symbols.

In Year 3, our students in February have focussed on rhythm. They have practised beat grouping in threes and fours. For example, students have been working in pairs to Echo Dance.

Students in Year 4 have focussed on the rhythms and riffs of Funk and Calypso music. As an example, they sang and performed the song Get Funky, and sang the Calypso song The Poor Old Dog. They also explored the beat, rhythm and movement of Rio Carnival.

In Year 5&6, students have focussed on Rhyme and Rhythm this February. For example, students have performed different hip hop moves, have written lyrics in pairs, made up their own loops, performed as a group, and echo clapped rhythms to the song Puttin’ It Out There. They have also had the opportunity to explore hip hop dance music.
