At Sacred Heart, we believe students thrive when they feel a strong sense of connection to their school community. We are committed to making the transition into a new school year as smooth as possible for both families and children. Whether they are starting school for the first time, transferring from another school, or returning to a new class with a new teacher, here are some helpful tips to support their transition:

Re-establish Routines: After the relaxed pace of the holidays, it’s important to bring back regular bedtimes, bath times, and meal times. A well rested and fed child is more likely to feel happy, relaxed, and ready to learn. Reduce distractions such as screens, tablets, and other devices—unless using them is a special reward for being ready on time. Give your child calm, clear instructions about what you want them to do, and offer specific praise when they follow through. Younger children may need more frequent reminders to stay on task.

Your family will have its own way of doing things. When you’ve worked out a morning routine to suit your family, write it up and display it where everyone can see it. You could include pictures to make the routine easier for your child to follow.

Stay Positive: Adjusting to a new school year, teacher, or routine can be challenging for some children. It may take time for them to feel comfortable, so encourage a positive mindset and reassure them that new experiences become easier with time. A good mood in the morning can set the tone for the day, positivity is contagious! One way to do this is by sharing something you and your child are looking forward to each day.

Encourage Independence: Help your child take responsibility by preparing their school bag and uniform the night before. Make sure essentials like lunchboxes, school hats, shoes, and readers are easy to find in the morning. Encourage your child to do more for themselves as they grow. For example, a five-year-old can put their lunchbox in their bag, while an eight-year-old can get dressed, make their own breakfast, and tidy up after themselves.

Arrive on Time: Punctuality is key! Arriving on time allows your child to participate in morning routines such as class prayer, roll marking and our morning school circle helping them to feel settled and connected with their teacher and peers.

Build a Connection: A simple greeting before or after school is a great way to establish a relationship with your child’s teacher and stay informed about how they are settling in.

Keep After-School Routines Simple: The first few weeks of school can be tiring. Allow your child time to rest and unwind by limiting extra-curricular activities and playdates until they adjust to their new routine.

Ask if You Have Any Questions: If you have any concerns, your child’s teacher should be your first point of contact. Our staff always bring the children outside at the end of the day, providing a great opportunity for teachers and parents to connect with a quick update, such as ‘Lily had a great day’ or ‘She wasn’t so settled today and may be a little tired.’ Our school Leadership Team is also available to support you with any queries or concerns.

By working together, we can ensure a smooth and positive start to the school year for your child. We look forward to a fantastic year ahead!
