Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 Families,
Moving into Week 4 of Term 1, our Grade 1 students have been engaging in a variety of exciting activities to help them settle into their classroom learning communities, and we're thrilled with how quickly they have progressed!
Here's a quick look at what our Grade 1 students are working on:
InitiaLit
InitiaLit is a literacy program that teaches children how to read and spell through daily structured literacy lessons. Students have been reviewing the letters and corresponding sounds they learned in Prep, and will continue to add new letter-sound combinations and new tricky words. During learning time, students will participate in whole class and independent targeted activities to practise these concepts, and you can help to support your child’s reading and spelling at home by reading with them every day, pointing out, explaining and discussing new words to enrich their vocabulary. Use songs and rhymes to play language games, and encourage your child to apply their developing knowledge of sounds and letters to text as they read aloud to you.
In the first few weeks of Grade 1 students have been reviewing their 5-Star Writing, practising the key elements of crafting high-quality written work. These are the 5 stars you can remind them of as they write at home:
The students have been practicing these skills while learning how to set up their books neatly using a ruler to support fine motor development. It’s been great to see their progress as they apply these strategies!
Maths
In Maths, our Grade 1 students are building their confidence with numbers. They are learning to recognise and understand numbers up to 120 by practising counting forwards and backwards, identifying number patterns, and comparing numbers. These skills help develop their number sense, giving them a strong foundation for future learning.
We will also have lots of fun exploring patterns! Students will learn to recognise and create simple repeating patterns like ABAB and AABAAB using colours, shapes, and sounds. Recognising patterns is an important step in learning more complex maths concepts later on.
You can support your child at home by encouraging them to notice and talk about numbers and patterns in daily life, as this is a great way to reinforce their learning!
Knowledge Building
In Knowledge Building, we've been exploring the world of Fables and Nursery Rhymes. The students have been discussing the structure and themes of classic fables like The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Goose and the Golden Egg, identifying the morals and lessons that can be learned from them.
We're excited to continue this journey of learning, and it's amazing to see how much the students are growing in such a short time. Thank you for your continued support!
