STEM News

Dear fellow scientists,

Prep students are learning to scan a QR code for their STEM activity.

Grade 1 students are exploring how technology has evolved from the past to the present. They compared old and new technology items, such as school bags, pens, cameras, and phones. For their activity, students matched their old technology with its modern counterpart by cutting and pasting.

Grade 2 students are learning about deforestation by taking notes on its causes, the importance of rainforests, and the effects of deforestation. They are also exploring ways to help prevent it and sharing facts about this issue. Watch this video on deforestation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH78JjkxBMM

Grade 3 students are identifying sources of heat and describing how they heat objects. They are learning to distinguish between a heat source and something that keeps you warm. For their activity, students drew arrows in their STEM workbooks to show the flow of heat when an object is heated. Grade 4 students are learning to identify erosion prevention strategies and make predictions. They are using scientific terminology to explain the results of an erosion investigation. Watch this video on coastal erosion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lk5WM096MA

Grade 5 students are learning to identify adaptations in animals. Students are describing what adaptation means and providing examples of animal adaptations. For their activity, students  drew a diagram of an animal and labeled their adaptations. Watch this video on animal adaptations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq63QW8g7jI

Grade 6 students are distinguishing between energy transfers and transformations. They completed an exit ticket to demonstrate their understanding the difference between energy transfer and transformation.
