Focus on Learning

Stage 2

Mathematics

The past week we have been looking into place value. We focused on developing our understanding of what thousands, hundreds, tens and ones mean and what their value is. We played some games that helped us understand the value of digits in a number. We especially loved playing place value bingo, listening to which number value is being called out to win, and playing the four-digit game. This game has students arranging numbers they roll on a dice to either get the biggest or the smallest value.

Writing

This term we have been looking into narrative texts, focusing on character development and building tension in a written text. The class has enjoyed reading our mentor text “The Thing About Oliver” and unpacking the techniques the author used to develop these skills.

On Thursday we completed our first Cold Write. The prompt was “What would you do if one morning, you woke up and noticed something strange? Everything around you had stopped! The birds were stuck in the air, cars stuck on the road, and even the wind had stopped blowing. Yet, you can still move and hear things.”

Science and Technology

Last week we started on a project, students surveyed our school vegetable garden. We learnt how plants and natural resources need water to grow. Their task was to design and plan a watering system. This week, they will work with groups to make a model and test out their system!!
