Literacy & Numeracy Report

Mr Andrew Ericksen

Whilst only a few weeks into the new year, Literacy and Numeracy endeavours are already underway.  Starting with our Year 7 student orientation, they have undergone PAT testing to help identify student needs in English and Mathematics classes. This data has also been used to help construct our High Achievers Classes.  There are a number of extension activities we are looking forward to offering our students this year.

After seeing pleasing increases in student engagement and reading results, the Renaissance Reading program is expanding in scope for 2025.  Initially the program covered Year 7 and Year 8, but it has now expanded to Year 9, Year 10 and the VM Literacy classes.  This program allows teachers to closely monitor student reading and comprehension progress, whilst also helping students choose novels which will challenge them to improve.  Our Year 7-10 English classes start with fifteen minutes of Independent Reading and offer the chance for students to immerse themselves in a great story.

There have also been new projects launching this year.  After undertaking the Leading Literacy course via the Victorian Academy for Teaching and Leadership, Greensborough College has implemented Year 7 Literacy classes.  As a part of English classes, these weekly lessons teach students how to decode prefixes and suffixes, explicitly cover grammar, punctuation and language conventions. There are also opportunities to put these learning experiences into practise via Low-Stakes Writing Activities and Oxford MyEnglish.

NAPLAN testing for our Year 7 and Year 9 students will begin on March 12.  NAPLAN student results will be used to help identify students who require additional tutoring assistance in class. The four tests students will undertake include: Reading, Writing, Grammar & Punctuation and Numeracy. These tests will be completed digitally, so our students will need to ensure their laptops are fully charged for the day.  Further details will be shared with students and families in the coming weeks.
