Assistant Principal's Report

Teaching & Learning AP

Mrs Rose Thomson

As the new school year begins, we strive to ensure all students at Greensborough College receive the support they need to belong to the school community, engage purposefully in learning and experience academic success. We embrace the positive opportunities that come with having a fresh start with new teachers, new classes and subjects, making new friends and trying different activities.

It is important as staff and parents that we support students to establish a daily routine, including charging laptops, packing school bag and lunch and setting homework times and bedtimes to help them feel prepared and ready for every school day.

Please let your child know they can approach their teacher with questions or concerns. Building rapport with teachers early on can help them feel supported. Communicating with teachers yourself may also help establish support for your child if any specific concerns arise.

We look forward to supporting all of our students in 2025!

Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting

Our Semester One Curriculum Maps will be published on Compass shortly, which outline the Years 7 to 10 Units of work and Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) and Years 11 and 12 Areas of Study and School Assessed Coursework (SACs) for all subjects.

We will employ a continuous approach to assessment and reporting, providing timely written feedback on summative assessment (Years 7 to 10 CATs and Years 11 and 12 SACs). Summative feedback is provided to students and families on a continuous basis through Compass Learning Tasks in the form of comments and/or rubrics.

To view the tasks and feedback, select the Learning Tasks tab on your child’s Profile page and refer to all ‘Assessment’ tasks.

On your child’s homepage, you will also be notified if there is an upcoming task due in a week or any overdue tasks.

A Semester One VCE SAC calendar will also be published to VCE students in the coming weeks. This SAC calendar will have the SAC date and time for every VCE subject. Students may have a SAC scheduled from 3:30pm to 5pm (which will appear on timetables). This is particularly for subjects where there are multiple classes and the SAC needs to run at the same time for all classes (English, General Mathematics, Business Management and Psychology). Other subjects may also schedule a SAC during this time to minimise impact on learning time.

Focussed Learning Time (FLT)

Focussed Learning Time (FLT) is a scheduled class every Friday period 4 for all Year 11 and 12 VCE students. This class helps promote the expectations of students to undertake quiet work tasks during study sessions and utilise study time effectively.

What does this session involve?

  • Independent private study for completing set work
  • Review of coursework
  • Opportunities to study for an upcoming SAC
  • Completing practice exam questions
  • Completing Edrolo tasks

Subject Teachers may attend these sessions to check in on how students are progressing in their subject and work with individual students/small groups.

Students should:

  • Come prepared every session with work to complete and bring required equipment.
  • Set up a study timetable for the week. Let the FLT teacher know what they will specifically be working on for the FLT session and all study sessions for the week.

We endeavour to schedule any assemblies and special programs as required during FLT sessions. This helps protect VCE subject time.

Enrichment Program at Years 7 and 8

The Enrichment Program at Greensborough College was initiated last year. Following a very successful first year, we are excited to see our Year 7 students undertaking the Athlete Development Program (ADP) or Science Investigations and Art Enrichment (Media studies and Visual Communication and Design), while our Year 8 students undertake ADP or eSports, Lego Lab: Gears and Gadgets, Vikings Myths and Legends or Music Development Program in Semester One and Dance, Heroes and Villains, eSports or Lego Lab: Gears and Gadgets in Semester Two.

We look forward to showcasing their work in these programs throughout the year.
