Why Not? – A story of discovering our bright possibilities

As the year draws to a close, I’d like to share a reflection inspired by a children’s book that continues to guide me in my work: Why Not? by Kobi Yamada. Although written for young readers, its message speaks to all of us. Yamada reminds us to stay hopeful, to step bravely into new possibilities, and to pay attention to the small 'glimmers' in our day, those quiet moments of joy, courage, connection or understanding, that can easily be missed unless we slow down and truly notice them.

The story invites us to greet each day with curiosity and an open heart. It reminds us that good things are always possible, and that even the smallest choices we make can shape our lives in meaningful and lasting ways. This year, I’ve been privileged to watch our students show courage, try new things, bounce back from challenges, and stay true to themselves. Their willingness to grow, to ask, to try, to wonder, is exactly the kind of spirit our world needs.

As our children step into a new year of learning, whether transitioning to high school, moving into a new class, meeting a new teacher, or discovering new passions and hobbies… I hope the phrase Why Not? stays with them. Why not search for the good in each moment? Why not take a small brave step into something unknown? Why not believe that your life can be extraordinary?

One of my favourite lines from the book says, 'What if the very thing you’ve been waiting for is just on the other side of your bravery?' It’s a beautiful reminder that possibility often begins with just one courageous choice.

As we head into the holidays and the Christmas season, may we continue to try, to notice, to care, to include others, and to make everyone feel they belong. We are deeply connected to one another and to the world around us. Every act of kindness (no matter how small) strengthens those connections and helps build a more compassionate community.

Kobi Yamada writes, 'Open your heart and take it all in'. The world is full of opportunities to learn, grow, and make a difference. When we keep our hearts open, wonderful things truly can unfold.

If you don’t know the story, here is an online version you can share with your children. It’s inspiring, uplifting, and a beautiful reminder for any child stepping into a new year or a big transition. New beginnings are full of possibility and courage; curiosity and kindness will always light the way.

Wishing every member of our community countless glimmers these holidays, and the chance to notice and cherish them.
